Nashville Homeless Blogger Panhandles Online

tobeornottobe
In his recent blog entry Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right which is covering a new book being released by The Nashville Homeless Power Project, Kevin Barbieux claims the stories in the book told by homeless people are colossal piles of bullshit. Barbieux says this project will spread a great deal of misinformation about homelessness and homeless people. The book is a compilation of homeless people's stories of homelessness that the Project is intending to sell as a fund raiser.

Barbieux has all but declared himself the Czar of the homeless in Nashville through this blog. After reading through the blog it appears he thinks he is the only person who knows what is best for the homeless. None of the service providers, shelters or even other homeless people know what they need and the services available suck because they have ALL failed him.

Kevin is a 25 year career homeless person who has a huge sense of entitlement and thrives on criticizing the system that he thinks keeps him homeless. He has had housing and jobs but it is always the fault of others or failure of the system that makes him homeless again. He walks away and abandons housing and jobs but takes no responsibility for his actions. Barbieux says I suffer from depression and social anxiety which prevents me from holding down a job for an extended period. Boy could I use that excuse on a daily basis!

He depends on support from the people who feel sorry for him. After reading his blog The Homeless Guy they send donations through his Paypal link. A technical method of panhandling has been created by this guy so I have to give him credit for being creative. It is apparent after reading through some of his writings that the soon to be released book he speaks of may not be the only colossal pile of bullshit being written regarding homelessness.

There are some good books written that do give the general public a better view of homelessness and for all we know the one he speaks of may be too. Keeping a proper perspective can be hard but easy if you keep your mind open to the reality that every homeless situation or person is different and as individual as each homeless individual. There is no single person who can speak for all homeless people, including a homeless professional like Kevin Barbieux.

I quite sending him money too after realizing his priorities are screwed up. When he sailed off to Second Life and begged for the expensive computer I turned it off. Play appeared to be more important than housing and he expects everything to be done for him. What is he doing to help himself?

I find this guy quite sneaky. He is now housed but not working and expecting others to donate money to keep him there I suppose. Whenever questions are posed as to whether he has any disability income, is he taking medication to control his mental illness etc. he does not answer. he has once again turned off the comments to the blog so questions cannot be asked. I have been watching this blof for years and use to sent him money until I caught on as many others have too. He depends on the newby's that he sucks in to send the money when he whines which is often. Quite a scam!

This just gets better and better. His backpack got stolen with his laptop in it and now he is begging for donations to buy a $3,000 laptop!!! Homeless and at risk for having the new one stolen just like the other? Makes a lot of sense to me. I could semi understand if he had housing but he does not. I have to give him credit, it takes lot's of nerve. http://thehomelessguy.blogspot.com/

Kevin's blog is not all about homelessness and his journal. Reading his blog can be like reading a newspaper . As such, we pay for newspapers and magazines. If people choose to donate, I see it as paying for the reading material.

Kevin gave a good review of another book about homelessness: Under the Overpass. The guys that wrote it did homelessness as an experiment. As such they did a good job showing homed the world of the homeless; but they knew they could walk away from that word at any time. Much of what Kevin says about services is true. Much of his story is typical of other homeless with mental health issues. People can see amputated legs, but they can not see into the brain, which makes it hard for some to understand the whys that Kevin explains as he goes along.

I would agree that Kevin sometimes thinks his word rules when it comes to knowledge about homeless people. He is a guy and does overlook homelessness from a female's perspective, such as in his lists of gift bag items. 'Save Karen' may have been the inventor of cyberbegging and Kevin is not alone in looking for help through kindness of online givers. In addition to donations, Kevin has sold scarves he knitted and other endeavors. He has been blogging for a long time. I think he opted out of AC too soon.
