Nathan Lang's God in the Box

An Eagerly Awaited Documentary

The older I get, the more intrigued I become with people's views and beliefs. I truly think that if we just all took the time to understand each other, we could live in peace on this planet. I know, I am a dreamer. I applaud Nathan Lang, a young reporter turned filmmaker, for having a vision in line with such thinking. I believe his simple question, "What does God look like to you"? and his research will culminate in an eagerly awaited, fascinating documentary.

Nathan was born in San Antonio, Texas of Jewish descent. He wanted to know how ordinary people across the nation answer the question, "What does God look like to you"? To collect the data, he and his team took a mobile sound booth/camera studio across country.

They called the booth, God in the box. It looked just like a white and black metal shipping container on the outside. Inside the walls were all covered with white and black sound proof material. Hidden video cameras recorded the participants. All one had to do was walk into the box and shut the door. Then, in private, you could answer the question.

They set up in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Birmingham, Alabama; Tempe, Arizona; Junction City, Kansas; Denver, Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Los Angeles, California. They let people wander into the box and recorded their answers to the question. Some drew God. Some played music. Some just described God or told why they couldn't describe God. Some were angry. Some were sad. Some were confused. He collected over a hundred hours of footage. People of many faiths and beliefs participated.

Nathan needs money to produce his documentary. To pre-publicize it, he has created the Godinthebox.com website. It shows the mobile booth, and partial interviews of some of those who partook in the exercise. It is a fascinating study and I am sure I will be riveted to my television set when it finally airs. (Nathan's dream is to get enough funding to produce the documentary for the summer 2009 Sundance Film Festival).

Be sure to visit Godinthe box.com. There is a video clip preview you can watch. I am sure you will catch the curiosity bug I have! You can actually sign up there to be notified when the documentary comes out, or get involved in organizing screenings in your community. There is also a great article about God in the Box at the following website.

I like hearing about people's beliefs, and defend people's right to believe in anything - as long as it's not inciting hatred and violence. If some people were less reactionary then the world would be a better place. I agree strongly with your opening paragraph, Danielle.
