Det. Brown was assigned to the liaison unit established by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. On July 30, 2010, the detective arrived at the mosque and was met by organizers who barred him from entering the location unless he relinquished his gun and shield.
The detective refused the order, dutifully waited outside and was finally greeted by Abdul Hafeez Muhammad, the imam of the mosque. The imam apologized to Det. Brown, but backed up the Nation of Islam militants and refused to let the cop into the meeting without surrendering his gun and shield.
An NYPD spokesperson stated, "Det. Brown was invited to the mosque but refused to comply with the request that he enter without his weapon or shield."
The NY Post reported a police source said it was a slap particularly since the detective had showed up in an act of conciliation and outreach.
The bigger problems and questions went unnoticed and unasked. History is usually interesting, but always relevant. Walk with me.
The Harlem mosque, Muhammad Mosque No. 7, is the NYC headquarters for the Nation of Islam (NOI). Louis Farrakhan aka Louis Eugene Walcott is the leader of the NOI and appointed Imam Abdul Hafeez Muhammad aka Kevin Muhammad as the leader of Mosque 7.
Long before Farrakhan's imam tried to punk Detective Brown, the notorious Mosque No.7 while under the stewardship of Farrakhan in 1972 was the site of a heinous cop killing.
On April 14, 1972, Police Officer Phillip Cardillo was ambushed and shot to death inside of Farrakhan's mosque. Officer Cardillo and other cops responded to a phony distress call of an "officer in need of assistance" from inside the Harlem mosque.
Once the cops were inside, the NOI militants locked the steel doors of the mosque and descended upon the trapped cops, beating them, stealing their firearms and shooting Police Officer Cardillo.
The severely wounded officers were eventually rescued by the heroics of additional officers responding to the now legitimate calls for assistance.
On April 20, 1972, Police Officer Phillip Cardillo died from the sustained injuries. In 1972, Ray Kelly was a patrolman and assigned to guard Officer Cardillo's hospital room.
Today, Ray Kelly is the police commissioner; the highest rank in the NYPD.
Why did Commissioner Kelly, armed with firsthand knowledge of the notorious Mosque No. 7:
1. Assign only one cop to enter the mosque?
2. Have a liaison unit to entertain the minions of the hateful and racist Louis Farrakhan?
The shameful answer is political correctness and political cowardice.
The NYPD commissioner may have the distinction of honorably serving the country in Vietnam as a Marine and fearlessly going after the bad guys in this country, but when standing up to hateful and dangerous men in NYC if they hide within Islam Ray Kelly doesn't possess the political courage or spine.
Ray Kelly was appointed as police commissioner for the second time in 2002, shortly after the 9/11 attacks. In 2005, shortly after the NYPD lost an officer fighting in Iraq, Kelly hired a cop with a tattoo of a sword adorned with the words "jihad" emblazoned on the recruits forearm.
Kelly's response to the obvious implications was to order NYPD supervisors to make sure they and their subordinates did not harass the new jihad inked officer and further ordered all new hires to cover-up their tattoos.
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves." -Abraham Lincoln
Jeremiah Wright as pastor of Trinity United, during the time Barack Obama was his mentee and parishioner, bestowed his church's highest "Lifetime Achievement" award upon Louis Farrakhan.
The story of the president's church honoring the leader of NOI was first reported here.
After the '72 murder of PO Cardillo, Farrakhan pressured his appeasers in city govt., which prompted the release of 16 "witnesses" that were inside the mosque during the ambush.
The following officials that facilitated the release of key subjects and botched the investigation, resulting in one acquittal and no further follow up were:
Mayor John Lindsay, Rep. Charles Rangel and then-Police Commissioner Patrick Murphy
The officials were also too fearful to attend Officer Cardillo's funeral.
The Daily News reported, the unsolved murder was reopened in 2006 and in a 2009 letter Ray Kelly promised the son of PO Cardillo that his father's fatal shooting remains an active investigation.
Perhaps the sins and insults surrounding Mosque No.7 are haunting Ray Kelly. Hopefully he will heed the lessons and consider himself lucky that the only thing hurt when he dispatched a solo cop on July 30 to that notorious mosque, was pride.
Louis Farrakhan's racist and hateful remarks are well chronicled and the NYPD should not spend resources appeasing his organization, just as they would not hold hands with the KKK or any other groups dealing in hate and violence.
Hopefully, the rank and file of the NYPD will recall the lessons of Mosque No. 7 both past and present and not sell their souls for weekends off. Ask yourselves this, will you be so willing to show up in an act of conciliation and outreach for the Klan?

Post a CommentAll those that say Min. Farrakhan is a hate monger, and other vile garbage have alot of gall. The police that came in the mosque in 1972 were starting the trouble. We have EVERY right to defend ourselves.
1972 was a hard time in this country for everyone, especially people of color. Many of them had died at the hands of racist police officers, and the so called "ambush" sounds like many overblown stories of blacks protecting themselves in their own areas were they had been for so long prey to this country. I am sorry so many people have had to die for nothing as this country still hates one another with such passion that it may never be cured. I think you perpetuate that hate, and are a hinderance to this America's progress with this biased article. Our past is pass, if we are going to move forward we have to be ready. Let 1972 stay were it is dead and gone.
enlightening article
Great article! Louis Farrakhan is nothing more than hate monger. It is a shame that because of the color of his skin, he is allowed to preach hate. Where is the "politically correct" crowd? Thank you for bring this tragic story to our attention, so that we will pay more attention.
Fairy-con is such an ass, I mis-spell his name wrong on purpose.
I guess you don't stay a cop long by being clueless. They invited him, that meant as a police officer :)
Incredible story--I'd never heard of PO Cardillo, nor the events you describe at Mosque 7. But wasn't it some brothers from Farrakan's Chicago NOI crew who murdered Malcom X in New York? I need to check out some history...thanks for a great article.
Interesting, as always!
I cannot seem to "trust" in much of anything these days! It appears our country is upside down...I can only shake my head! This is ax excellent article! Sylvia is so right about political correctness being the death of us!!!!!
Why even bother to try to reconcile with this animals?
