National Adoption Month-Who should consider adoption?

National Adoption Month May Be the Best Time to Get Information About Adopting a Child

Pat Anthony
November is National Adoption Month. This is a time when more efforts are made by agencies to bring information to the general public about the adoption process.

Adopting a child will not be easier during National Adoption Month as the same steps are followed by everyone. The requirements for adopting a child differ when adopting through the state and through private adoption services.

Anyone adopting through the state will be required to attend a number of classes. Some parents feel this is insulting because they already have children, or they have raised one generation and now want to add to the family. However, the classes are not about changing any experiences adults have had-this would be impossible. The classes are to help adults prepare for the child they will adopt by learning the many adoption issues.

Those choosing to adopt may want to know leaving the country is not necessary. There are thousands of adoptable children in the United States in need of a family. In most cases state assistance is available to cover legal fees that will occur during the adoption process.

Depending on the state, those eligible to adopt will include the working class, the wealthy, the young and old, heterosexual couples, gay couples in most states and single people, straight or gay. Every state offers different types of help for those adopting.

Some attending classes and preparing for adoption are surprised to be told this is not about their needs for a child. This is about the child's need for parents.
