National Dance Day Inspired by So You Think You Can Dance Creator

National Dance Day is being recognized by an official act of congress on July 31, 2010. The grassroots movement was created by the Fox TV hit 'So You Think You Can Dance,' creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe, according to a July 23, 2010 press release from Fox. The movement is a motivator for everyone to get up and dance for the health benefits of physical activity.

Dancing can be terrific exercise that can be enjoyed by all levels, from beginner to professional. National Dance Day and the publicity brought to the cause by So You Think You can Dance, should be a motivation for people to get up off the couch and try some of the moves they see on the television program. Dancing can benefit health because it offers cardiovascular benefits, muscle toning and limberness.

On the inaugural event for National Dance Day there will be flash mobs in Washington, D.C. and in Los Angeles. There are also dance events scheduled throughout the nation, including: Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; Phoenix, Arizona; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; Sacramento, California; Nashville, Tennessee; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Diego, California; Birmingham, Alabama; and Orange, New Jersey.

National Dance Day is supported by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a long-time proponent of healthy lifestyles. The congresswoman will introduce a National Dance Day resolution to promote dance education and physical fitness at a press conference in Washington D.C., on Saturday, July 31, 2010..

The Lifelong Improvements in Food and Exercise (LIFE) Act, introduced by Congresswoman Norton in January, is a bill that directs the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be a lead agency in combating obesity and sedentary lifestyles.

National Dance Day is an initiative that should work hand-in-hand with the Let's Move campaign, introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama earlier in the year. Let's Move is an initiative that encourages healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle for children, combating the epidemic of childhood obesity. Michelle Obama introduces Let's Move to Fight Childhood Obesity

National Dance Day and the Let's Move campaign work by educating the public about the health benefits of physical activity. Children and adults can benefit by paying attention to the educational opportunities offered by these healthy living initiatives.

National Dance Day shows that the dance craze on 'So You Think You Can Dance' is more than entertainment. It is a call to get up and join in the dance for good health.

Dance classes and workshops can help to teach beginners the proper techniques to make dancing safer and more fun. Like any change in physical activity, if you have been sedentary, you should get a doctor's feedback before starting on a routine that may be too rigorous.
