Prayer is O.K. In Public Venues

Sheryl Young
This is just a quickie reminder. Thursday May 7 (or the first Thursday of any year) is an American designated National Day of Prayer. I can hardly believe it's already a year since writing about this for 2008.

Let's put aside all the talk about conservatives, liberals, who's accusing who of hating others and just let people pray while we have the freedom to do it openly in this country. Although primarily organized as a Day of Prayer based on Judeo-Christian values, nobody's going to stop anyone else from praying.

This isn't a day to pray about Aunt Lizzie's gizzard or 80-year-old Uncle Joe's ulcer. It's designated as a day to pray for our country and our federal, state and local leaders; America's situation in the world and other workers like teachers, policemen, firemen, etc.

"If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...as for me and my househould, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15 NIV.

Interestingly, I attended a county commissioners' meeting on this day to help support a movement to defeat a very cruel animal trapping measure. The meeting led off with an invocation to pray, and our prayers were answered with success against the trappers!
