National Dog Day Poems and Rhymes for a Friend

Peter Maida
What better way to show our friends

how special we think they are;

than to give them a day that intends

to honor dogs near and far.

There are many poems about dogs,

and I can't say that this one's so great.

But I write what I see in my journals and logs,

and I see that dogs are first rate.

I'm not much on pedigree;

I think a mutt is just fine.

Just look in a puppy's face and you'll agree

there is no need for a bloodline.

I like my dogs to be bigger;

ones that like to romp in play.

Ones whose goofy actions, laughter can trigger,

on National Dog Day.

There will be many poems for National Dog Day,

and many will praise their pets.

This one if for all dogs both grand and stray,

and their caretakers, our hard working vets.

For all of you that share your homes,

with your own canine companion.

Sit down and write your own Dog Day poems,

and praise your four legged champion.
