It seems that the celebration of donuts can be traced all the way back to 1938, according to Wikipedia. National Donut day is based on a Chicago Salvation Army fundraiser to help people out during the great depression. It was also to serve as a reminder of the service performed on the battlefields in France during WWI when the Salvation Army served coffee and donuts in the trenches to the brave men fighting the war on the front lines.

Check you local papers and websites for any local free donut offers for June 4th, National Donut Day. Such as in downtown Cincinnati at Fountain Square from noon to 2 p.m., there will be a donut celebration that will include celebrity doughnut-stacking competitions, sliding doughnut races and a doughnut hole toss contest. Local Cincinnati doughnut shops will be offering free donuts and the Salvation Army will provide the free coffee.

Krispie Kreme will definitely profit from this. No one can eat just one KK.

P.S., I HATE that every one misspells doughnut now! A whole generation of kids think it's correctly spelled "donut." Sigh.

And, oh, Dear Lord, they're opening four new Krispy Cremes in Philly this summer, with their flagship store RIGHT DOWN THE CORNER FROM ME! If I look out the window from where I'm typing right now, I'll be able to SEE IT! Help! Save me!
