National Harbor, Washington DC: The Latest Tourist Attraction

Peter Maida
National Harbor is the Washington, DC area's latest tourist attraction. It is located just off the capital beltway on the Maryland side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. This project has been planned for many years and now it is finally up and running. It contains a large beautiful area that is worth a day trip for locals and visitors alike. One of the main attractions is a great statue called The Awakening. The statue rested at Hanes Point for thirty years before being moved to National Harbor. It is actually five separate giant aluminum pieces, a head, hand, arm, leg, and foot arranged to make it appear like a 100 foot giant was coming out of the ground. It is a spectacular sight and worth the trip in itself.

There are many fine hotels at National Harbor including Westin, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, and Wyndham, but the centerpiece of the harbor is the magnificent Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. This is a huge structure with an impressive 18 story atrium. The atrium is home to trees, cottages, fountains, fine restaurants, and an incredible view of the Potomac. The atrium is one of the largest tourist attractions at the harbor and a must see for any visitor.

National Harbor hosts The American Market Saturdays from 10AM to 3PM. This is a classic open air market with specialty foods such as sweet breads from Grace's Pastries and specialty desserts like Butter Pecan Tarts and the Kentucky Butter Cake from Desserts, Etc. You will find crafts, floral designs, baked goods, and fashion accessories available throughout the day.

On Friday night enjoy jazz on the waterfront starting at 8PM. Check the web site for the schedule. This is an open air concert that is free to all.

National Harbor also hosts top quality events. On July 17-18 they will be presenting the High School Musical stage show. Tickets are now available but they will be going fast. Doors open at 6PM each night.

On Tuesday night National Harbor shows classic movies on their big outdoor screen. You are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and join the fun. The National Harbor's Sunset Concert series is in full swing. Check the web site for tickets and schedule information. On July 23rd the great classic rock band Yes will be appearing along with Asia. Yes is one of my all time favorite bands; you bet I'll be checking this one out.

National Harbor also hosts a wide variety of Potomac River cruises during the spring and summer months including a Seadog speed boat cruise, a water taxi that links National Harbor to Old Towne Alexandria, and a guided bass fishing tour.

Shopping is also available at a growing list of upscale stores. They offer the finest quality items, but don't expect big bargains.

Another growing list is the list of available restaurants. There is a restaurant for almost every taste but check the menu and the prices before digging in. I have not been in every restaurant so I cannot say this is absolutely true but I have found the food a bit pricey, but do have an alternative for you. If you want to spend an afternoon enjoying the sights and events at National Harbor you can stop for lunch on the way. Instead of taking the National Harbor exit off the beltway take exit 4A to Oxon Hill Road. Along Oxon Hill Road you will find Wendy's, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, and Pizza Hut. In the shopping center on your right you will find the Hunan East Chinese Restaurant and a Subway. You can stop and fill up the family without breaking the bank. Continue in the same direction on Oxon Hill Road past route 210 to a right on Harbor View Road and you'll be there with your money in your pocket.

National Harbor is well worth a drive if you are local and well worth adding to your tourist schedule if you are visiting the National Capital area.
