Boyne City, Michigan's favored fungus takes center stage at "Morel Mushroom Festival" time with cooking demonstrations, foraging seminars, mushroom hunts, crazy contests and a plethora of other culinary driven events.
What follows is a snappy summary of the scheduled 2011 homage to the humble morel, as well as a few mushroom facts for the uninitiated.
Summary of Events
This year the National More Mushroom Festival will be held from May 12th, 2011 through May 15th.
The festivities will commence on May 12th with the 3:00 pm opening of the "Schmidt Amusement Carnival" followed by the zany "Morel Challenge" at 5:30 pm.
The Morel Challenge involves the creation of racing vehicles constructed out of produce and mushrooms.
Signature events such as the "Morel Wine and Dine", "Great Morel Giveaway", "Taste of Morels" and the "National Mushroom Hunt Competition" are already on tap.
Other events scheduled for the 2011 "National Morel Mushroom Festival" include a performance by the "Front Porch Pickers", four days of carnival rides, farmer's market, a one day "Michigan Outdoor Recreational Experiences and Living" show, free historical museum tours, a disc golf tournament and a three day craft fair.

Morel Facts
As the folks in Boyne City can attest, not being able to tell the difference between a real Morel and an imposter can have deadly consequences.
According to mushroom aficionado Michael Kuo of "MushroomExpert," bona fide Morel mushrooms are void inside and come in an array of customary colors and shapes.
Traditionally these elusive woodland treats are black, yellow or half free in appearance with regular, pitted caps.
