Physical Therapists across America are focusing on better health for the almost 100 million Americans who are overweight. Obesity is a disease that continues to grow in vast numbers on a yearly basis.

According to recent studies and research, physical activity is non-existent in many Americans lives and it is the main factor in obesity. Children learn by example and if they learn to be sedentary from an adult, they usually grow up being sedentary adults themselves. In the obese, activity is especially dangerous due to higher risk of injury with the increased amount of weight being supported on the joints. Activity needs to be limited to low impact such as weight training, yoga and other types of exercise that don't promote joint stress, to see results in a safe manner.

Many patients of Physical Therapists are the obese and overweight. A Physical therapists main job is to train people how to move correctly and without pain. This is just the prescription needed to help the overweight and obese patients lose weight and retain their newly healthy bodies.

Obesity is being looked at as preventable not just treatable, as in the past. If children can be taught at an early age how to eat correctly and get the recommended amount of exercise needed to be healthy, the obesity rates would decrease. College students are a substantial part of the population being targeted for Physical Therapists to work with, also.

Everyone needs daily amount of exercise recommended for their body type, health, and lifestyle. For some, though, this is becoming a means of staying alive. Death rates have recently risen sharply from obesity related causes. This is no longer something we just hear about happening, many of us are deal with this as reality in our daily lives.

Programs such as "Fit Families" in California are rising up to this challenge of more activity. More programs are needed around the country to get more involvement in and put an end to this epidemic. Several school programs are being launched in California in an effort to target children and young people.

Children are especially prone to the physical appearance effects of obesity from their peers. But all, young and old, are affected by cardiovascular problems, high cholesterol, and diabetes. This is indeed a controllable disease, and Physical Therapy Month is making strides towards that goal.
