National Pie Day a Day for Great Celebration in the United States

January 23rd is National Pie Day, According to the American Pie Council; A Day Created to Celebrate Pie!

National Pie Day is a day that only comes once a year. National Pie Day 2009 falls on Friday, January 23rd, and was commissioned as a day to just have some pie. National Pie Day was created by the American Pie Council as simply a day to celebrate pie back in 1986. It was a novel idea, and has been going on for the past 23 days as a great way for fans of pie everywhere to celebrate this exemplary baked good. Now 2009's Pie Day has come, and everyone has a chance to celebrate once again.

If anything, National Pie Day gives everyone an excuse to have that piece of pie after lunch or dinner, because after all, it is a holiday that must be celebrated! According to the American Pie Council, National Pie Day began its celebration in 1986 to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of Crisco. The anniversary was in itself a celebration of Crisco "serving foods to families everywhere", and National Pie Day has marked every January 23rd since that anniversary. As Crisco closes in on its own 100th anniversary, Americans can celebrate another day dedicated to pie.

Admittedly, a national holiday dedicated to the eating of pie is not something that is great for the waistbands of America. It's already a nation struggling with over-eating and diabetes, and to that extent, definitely a day where nobody should be over-eating or taking on the challenge to finish off an entire pie in a single day or sitting. It is however a day to celebrate the saying "as American as apple pie", so maybe this can even be viewed as a national service to people who make pies everywhere by sitting down to have a healthy sized slice.

The American Pie Council also holds National Pie Championships each year, which takes four days to decide which pies in the country are the best. Participants include amateur pie makers, professional bakers and chefs, and commercial pie companies from around the country. This competition has been held since 1995, and is a great place to find some of the best pie in the country. One doesn't have to compete to share in the celebration of National Pie Day though, but just simply needs to find a slice of their favorite pie and sit down for a nice treat on January 23rd.
