National Pie Day, celebrated on January 23rd, was created by the American Pie Council and is dedicated to celebrating pie. The hardest decision you will be making today is what kind of pie you will be enjoying.

The first pies were made by early Romans who may have actually learned from the Greeks. Sometimes the pies were made in "reeds" which were used to hold the filling and not for eating.

According, to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word pie was popular in the 14th century. The first published recipe was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie by the Romans.

Pies came to England as early as the twelfth century. Early pies were mostly made with meat, and fruit pies were most likely first made in the 1500s. English settlers brought pie to America and it has evolved to become a big part of American culture.

There are many events being held in January to celebrate pie day in the U.S. Here are a few:

Dubois, Idaho

The Clark County District Library will be handing out a free slice of pie and information about pies and the American Pie Council to their patrons on January 23rd.

Chicago, Illinois

The American Pie Council will be distributing 300 four inch pies in different flavors on January 23rd. The pies are donated by Bonert's Slice of Pie and will be used for National Pie Day promotions throughout the day in the Chicago area.

Rockland, Maine

Historic Inns will be celebrating pie day with Pies on Parade on January 24th, 1:00 - 5:00pm. There will be samples of more than 40 pies, recipes to take home and tours of the inns.

Frankenmuth, Michigan

Zehnder's Snowfest and the Michigan Apple Committee are hosting the Fifth Annual Michigan's Best Apple Pie Contest on Wednesday, January 27th.

Napes, New York

Monica's Pies will be giving away a free slice of pie to patrons in honor of National Pie Day on January 23rd.

Osseo, Hayward, Rice Lake and Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Norske Nook Restaurant, bakery and gift shops will offer a slice of pie to any Veteran with a veterans id.
