The first pies were made by early Romans who may have actually learned from the Greeks. Sometimes the pies were made in "reeds" which were used to hold the filling and not for eating.
According, to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word pie was popular in the 14th century. The first published recipe was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie by the Romans.
Pies came to England as early as the twelfth century. Early pies were mostly made with meat, and fruit pies were most likely first made in the 1500s. English settlers brought pie to America and it has evolved to become a big part of American culture.
