National Poetry Writing Month - NaPoWriMo

Poets, Start Your Engines!

Jillian McCoy
April is National Poetry Writing Month (or simply National Poetry Month), also shortened to NaPoWriMo. Not to be confused with NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), which is in November, National Poetry Month gives would-be poets the challenge of writing a poem a day for 30 days. I've decided to participate in NaPoWriMo this year, even though I'm a little late!

I enjoy writing non-fiction most of the time, usually in the form of informative articles or how-tos. I do write a little poetry, and do some fiction writing, but up until now I haven't really contributed any online - or even really let people read it. Apologies if it seems a little unpolished or raw.

I have yet to be formally published for any of my writing efforts, so I don't necessarily peg myself as one type of writer. Each year it seems like I'll remember it's National Poetry Month or NaNoWriMo about halfway through, and wind up not participating because I remembered too late. This year I was still late (today is the 8th of April), but I'm determined to make up for it. I'm going to post a poem for each day of April - so 30 poems in total. Hopefully I'll remember NaNoWriMo early this year and will contribute to that when the time comes too.

Since I'm starting late, I've had to dip into my "stash" of poems I've already written. For the rest of the month, I hope to create brand-new material, however. Below are the links to the poems I've already submitted for the month. There are 8 in total, one for each day of the month thus far.

Calypso - April 1st

History is a Watchful Eye - April 2nd

Moonlight (Haiku) - April 3rd

Breathing - April 4th

Lauren - April 5th

The Wounded Bicycle - April 6th

The Breakup (Haiku) - April 7th

Caesar - April 8th

It's not too late to get involved and share your poetry with the world. If you're interested in participating in NaPoWriMo, head to Poets.org for more information, tips and events. If you're on Twitter, use hashtag #NaPoWriMo to connect with other poets and promote your work. Fellow AC writer (and zombie enthusiast) Gabriel Gadfly recently wrote a helpful article for taking on the 30-day challenge: How to Write 30 Poems in 30 Days. Feel free to comment below if you have poetry you'd like to share - especially if your poetry was written for the National Poetry Month challenge!
