National Popcorn Day

National Popcorn day has always been celebrated at the end of January, although no one seems clear on the how or why of it. Some people claim that National Popcorn Day is a holiday in its own right, while others say that National Popcorn Day and the Superbowl are one and the same. Whatever your opinion, popcorn is a fun and nutritious snack. Here are some facts about National Pocpcorn Day and popcorn in general.

The Popcorn Board hosts a website at popcorn.org that is full of useful information about popcorn. They admit that they do know which group founded National Popcorn Day, but of course they heartily approve. Here are some facts about popcorn that you may not know:

Air popped popcorn has about 31 calories per cup.

Oil popped popcorn has only 55 calories per cup.

Popcorn with a light drizzle of butter has only 90-120 calories per cup.

Popcorn is considered to be a whole grain.

So, it may be no coincidence that National Popcorn Day is in January, which is the month that many people begin dieting for the new year. No matter how you enjoy your popcorn, it is still low in calories and high in fiber.

For more information about National Popcorn Day and popcorn in general, check out the Popcorn Board's website. There, you can find popcorn recipes, popping tips, and some history of popcorn. Popcorn.org also has some great information for kids. They can watch popcorn pop, print out popcorn coloring pages, play popcorn games, and print out educational information on popcorn. You can also find a list of books about popcorn at the site.

Whether or not today is National Popcorn day, help yourself to some popcorn.
