National Quilting Day - March 20, 2010

Happy National Quilting Day!

Ana Blanco
National Quilting Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in March every year. It celebrates the beautiful quilts and the amazing quiltmakers. This is also the perfect day to wrap oneself in a quilt.

History of National Quilting Day

The National Quilting Association created National Quilting Day in 1991. This year marks the 19th Annual National Quilting Day. The National Quilting Association was founded in 1970. They unofficially expanded National Quilting Day to last the whole month of March.

Activities You Can Do for National Quilting Day

The National Quilting Association gives several ideas of activities anyone can do this Quilting Day. They suggest:

  1. Work on a quilt for your favorite cause. There are several national projects, such as ABC Quilts, Project Linus and Tie One On for the Troops. You can also check if quilts are needed for children's services, nursing, rehabilitation facilities or local hospitals.
  2. Set up an exhibit at a local historical society or library.
  3. Organize a quilt history day.
  4. Help a school, 4H or scout group work on a quilt. You can also teach your children, grandchildren, nieces etc, how to make a quilt.

Take a look at their website for more ideas. You can also find a free pattern on their website to help you celebrate National Quilting Day, and they suggest where you can donate the finished project.

For more service projects take a look at this site. You will find descriptions of several charity projects, including, Quilts of Valor, Quilts for Kids, Project Linus and the One Million Pillowcase Challenge.
