National Veterans Awareness Week

In a U.S. Department of Defense press release, President Bush is urging Americans to recognize veterans' service and commitment to their country during "National Veterans Awareness Week" this month. This week is to emphasize the importance of the need to develop educational programs regarding the contributions veterans have made to the country.

President Bush would like for Americans to remember the brave men and women who served our country starting on Veterans Day November 11th through November 17th. The president asks for state, federal and local businesses to fly the American Flag high and proud during that week. He also calls for Americans to participate in patriotic activities in their communities. Bush also invited civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, businesses, unions, and the media to support those who have served in the US Armed Forces, past and present during "National Veterans Awareness Week".

"Throughout our history, America has been protected by patriots who cherished liberty and made great sacrifices to advance the cause of freedom. On Veterans Day, we honor these extraordinary Americans for their service and sacrifice, and we pay tribute to the legacy of freedom and peace that they have given our great nation." Bush said. (Kruzel, American Forces Press Service, 2007)

Bush also makes reference to our soldiers currently fighting The War on Terror in his Veterans Day Proclamation: "Like the heroes before them, today a new generation of men and women are fighting for freedom around the globe. Their determination, courage, and sacrifice are laying the foundation for a more secure and peaceful world."

There will be many local ceremonies across the country honoring American veterans. For information about ceremonies in your area, check with your local Veterans Administration office. On a broader scale, The Nationally Televised National Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery this year will be hosted by The Marine Corps League. There will be a tour of the Marine Corps War Memorial and Korean War Memorial on November 10th. On November 12th there will be a tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.

I agree. Whehter or not we want our troops in Iraq, we should support them when they return. Good article.

I hate how vets get a bad rep these days; usually by people who would never be willing to put their lives on the line for others. I come from a long line of men and women who have served in the military - - both of my uncles, my father, my father-in-law, and my mother-in-law. My husband is a vet as well and I venture a guess that I would have been had I been born in the right time and place.

I admire people that are willing to kill or be killed for a cause. However I do not believe our troops are fighting a war on terror, but committing genocide on people's in Iraq. Due to the talk of bringing back the Draft, it seems, perhaps a genocide on US citizens, through lives lost fighting illegal wars and young people being cripled and maimed, is another of Bush's aims. God has a special place in hell reserved for him and his followers; right next to people like Hitler.

Sounds like a PR move by Bush. Glad he's honoring the vets (I'm married to one), but I wonder how many of them will actually give a hoot. Some shopping money for the holidays or a few gas cards would be better...

Wilk169 makes a very good point. So many of our vets return home to limited resources for them. I agree with Sahmontiel, our troops should NOT be in Iraq. BUT since they are there those men and women need our support 100%

That for the article. We will honor the veterans of this war and all the previous wars as we do every year. They all deserve to be honored.

I honor November 11th every single year (it's my birthday). I roll my eyes at the thought of doing anything that coward Bush suggests considering he's the one who screwed things up for the US, and the troops shouldn't be over there. However, I do show support for the soldiers I know who are in the army to protect the country, regardless of this being the War on Gas.
