National Waffle Week

Lori Piper
National Waffle Week is the week of September 2-8. Were you conscious of this little known week long salute? Okay, the majority of us were not aware, but I am here to change that. Waffles lovers throughout the world unite! Stand up and be counted! Are you geared up? Prepped and ready for this week? What can you do this week to observe this wonderful celebration? Not to worry, I am here to help you.

Ways to observe National Waffle Week #1

Eat waffles. Eat them every day for breakfast. One aspect I love about waffles is that they are sold in the frozen foods aisle of your local supermarket. Place them in the toaster rather than Pop tarts. Not only are they healthier, but they are more filling. Your child will have a stronger capacity to retain knowledge with a waffle-filled stomach than a Pop tart filled one. Moreover, you can enjoy a hearing your children say, "Let go of my Eggo!" What they have never heard that pop culture advertisement saying? Educate them and say it to them. What is this world without pop culture phenomenon?

Ways to observe National Waffle Week #2

Dig out the out waffle maker from the garage shelf. You know it is back behind that old small fryer you just had to have to make all those homemade french fries. Dust and wash it off and begin a week of make you own waffles! Add some blueberries or strawberries. Discover what flavors syrup goes best with waffles (maple is my choice). At the end of the week, should you determine that waffles are not really your thing, do not simply put the waffle maker back up on the shelf, but donate it to an area women's shelter or your local goodwill store. Many people enjoy making homemade waffles every weekend and it is an appliance every home should have in its possession at some point.

Two words- waffle fries! These are my favorites and they are waffle shaped!

The Waffle, also called the movement for an Independent Socialist Canada, was a extremist wing of Canada Democratic Party. The name Waffle according to historian Desmond Morton in his book, The New Democrats, derived the first draft of their manifesto. Ed Broadbent is quoted as stating, "that if they had to choose between waffling to the left and waffling to the right hey waffle to the left." The name remained.

Look for other instances to the word waffle in history. Have a contest with your family to see who can come up with the most references. Discuss your finding over, of course, waffles!

Ways to observe National Waffle Week #6

Treat a family in need to a dinner at a local restaurant that serves breakfast, to include waffles. The treat can be anonymous. Leave a gift card for them at their children's school, in their mailbox, or with their pastor. Make a big batch of waffles and take them to your local senior citizens' establishment and enjoy! Do not forget the syrup.

This week is not to be confused with International Waffle Day. That will be celebrated on March 25th .
