Nations Prison Population Makes History as Number One for Incarceration

Leading the Planet

New studies show that the United States is the number one incarcerator, and that one in every 99.1 adults are incarcerated throughout the nation according to The Times of India.

The study shows that one in nine young black males are the highest rated prisoners.

Out of a population of 230 million, the prison population rose to 2.3 million, and by 25,000 last year, followed by China and Russia. Studies state the USA could "lead the planet" in rate of incarcerated.

Statistics from Pew's study on the Justice Department in 2006 show one in 106 adult males are in prison, one in 36 Hispanics, and one in 15 black men, and out of those, one in nine are young males.

Women incarcerations are less, but yet one in 265 women are incarcerated, and the highest number of women are those of minority. The study also shows a higher rate of black women being one in 100, while Hispanics show one in 297, and white women are one in 355.

Pew also states that half of released inmates return to prison within three years. Tough drug laws such as "Three Strikes" are one of the reasons being blamed for such a high incarceration rate.

The prison budget has increased from 10.6 billion in the eighties, to 315 percent higher today, or an increase of 44 billion dollars according to the study.

Yep, we've surpassed even Stalin's Gulag. Most of this is due to the disastrous "War on Drugs," which I have come to believe is a pretext for the establishment of a police state, and the creation of a new slave population.

Wow this is something that our country can be proud of! It sure shows that what we are doing here is not working. I wish America would wake up and realize that their penal system is not working, but then there would be a lot of out of work people and it is a money making industry. Great reporting Dee.

I saw on the news that some states spend more on prisons than on schools. Wow - what is wrong with this picture. The same news reporter said it is not because crime has gone up, but because society demanded that we stop paroling prisoners. Ironically, they say that is why crime has stayed level. HHMM - what a price to pay for lowering crime. Thank you for the report. The stats are alarming.

Thanks so much for all the comments. I have to wonder how the incarceration of a certain group of society affects the rest of society. Is there a shortage of young black males? I am going to try and do a study on this.

And the news networks generally gave this short shrift. In Michigan, meanwhile, conservatives are advocating maximum minimum sentences for the young fellows designated as being in gangs. Saginaw's police chief and community police officer went to the state capitol and testified in favor, with no City Council policy authorization. I protested this and the reaction was like I'm a pariah. But I'm not going to quit, Dee, not when I see how hard you work on these issues. -- Mike
