Nations & Their Stupidities

Kuldeep Khadka
The day I realized this, I realized the whole absurdity and the stupidity of mankind. It pains my heart when I realize at times how stupid we humans can be. How inhuman can we be? How barbarous can we be? Nations fighting against nations. Murdering, butchering in the name of religion and sovereignty. Nations competing against nations, to become more and more destructive and violent. What I can see is that human seldom learn from their own mistakes. It looks to me as though two world wars were not enough for us to learn any lessons from the destruction and devastation it caused to humanity and all the living entities. I have never seen an animal rape and murder another animal.Yes, they kill but only when they are hungry or in self-defense. And how presumptuously we call ourselves the superior race. Just make a simple observation and you'll see that man is the only animal living in discord with Nature. And when natural-calamities like the " Tsunami " occurs its strange and mysterious indeed to discover that most of the animals had already moved to high-grounds before the havoc struck them and we humans in spite of our satellites and advanced technologies were the most badly hit.

Nations - Do we really need nations? Do we really need to be nationalists? Why can't we just have - one world, one nation? Why do I need to restrict myself to a certain caste, a certain creed, a sect or a community? Humans are the only living beings in this earth aware of these " politically demarcated " lines which we see in our maps and Atlases? I mean why can't I just be a global human being? If in the Olympics, the whole world can come together and play together, why can't the whole world simply come together and live together? And in the name of nation and religion, repeatedly we have seen in History; stupid and idiotic personalities like Hitler and Mussolini are born who misguides the mass by enticing them. Turn the pages of your history books and in the name of nations we have got nothing but wars and bloodshed. Haven't we have had enough of them?

I've heard when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and looked at the earth, he said something like this to himself - " Oh! look at my beautiful earth! " " Thank God! he didn't say - " Oh! look at my beautiful United States of America." There certainly was a reason to it... Contemplate over it and you'll understand what I mean! It's a simple psychology. The more restricted you become the more limited and narrow you become and the more higher you elevate yourself to, the more broader your perspective becomes.

Well, when I write on such topics I may well be tagged as a dreamer. But like Yanni says, "That everything great that has ever happened to humanity since the beginning, has begun as a single thought in someone's mind. And if anyone is capable of such great thought, then
all of us have the same capacity, capability. Because we all are the same."
- Reflections of Passion - Yanni - Acropolis (Live)

And I don't feel there's any hope for humanity if we continue to restrict ourselves to nationalities and boundaries. Cause this time if another world war breaks out, perchance you can well imagine what the outcome can be? And the possibility seems to be more and more imminent every now and then. Right now too there's growing tension between Pakistan and the United States, Russia and Georgia, Iraq and Afghanistan. And both are the so called super-powers; the nuclear powers! Who knows what these mad politicians can do? If 63 years back they could bombard Nagasaki and Hiroshima with an atom bomb who can say that they'll hesitate to use the nuclear bomb as well! I don't mean just the U.S in this regard but anybody for that matter.

So I request you to give it a thought friends! Let's not be fooled by these fools called politicians anymore. Lets be more aware and conscious. I am from Nepal and I have seen it for myself, how ruthlessly and relentlessly like a vulture politicians can eat up a nation. In the name of development first they start a revolution, hinder the ongoing development and destroy the economics and then again they talk of development. Ironical as it may seem.

Before I conclude, I would like to share a stanza of a beautiful song from an Indian movie called " Refugee". I have translated the verse in English too. I find it very deep and touching. There the lover and his beloved sings this song to one another. The guy is a man from India who helps Bangladeshi refugees smuggle into Pakistan. And the girl is a Bangladeshi trying to enter Pakistan with her family. In the process of the journey they fall in love with one another. And when the moment of separation comes they sing to one another this beautiful song,
" Panchhi nadiyaan pawan ke jhonke
Koi sarhad na inhein roke
Panchhi nadiyaan pawan ke jhonke
Koi sarhad na inhein roke
Sarhad insaanon ke liye hai
Socho tum aur maine kya paaya
Insaan hoke " which when translated becomes -

No boundaries did ever stopped the birds, the rivers and the breeze......
No boundaries did ever stopped the birds, the rivers and the breeze......
The boundaries are for humans......
Just think it over!!! What did we ever get by becoming human beings???

Yes, because of absurdities like these at times I am compelled to wonder " What did we ever get by becoming human beings???"

Nice try, but WRONG! Your "one world, one nation" fantasy will come to life the day the aliens show up on our doorstep. Til then, it's nationalism as our identifying entity. Mammals that live in family groups, nuclear & extended family groups and societies always insulate themselves from others of their own kind who's only fault is not being a member of the same "clan." No societal engineering has ever been successful, nor will it be until a threat greater than another man emerges. Look at history a little, Look at Mammalia. We share a lot of genes, thus we are alike. We are still animals, and the top predator. At this time we only fear each other. Til then, I have more in common with a brother from Cleveland than I do the whitest Frenchman on this rock. Nationality is little different than family. Would one advocate dropping familial bonds as well? What about allegiance to your favorite sports team? That is familial bond, albeit a looser and by choice one.
