A Look at Natural Ways to Prevent and Treat Infections

Leslie Reese, Nutritional Educator
It seems today like everyone is busy, and with so much to do we often feel like our bodies cannot keep up and are working against us. I have heard those statements many times. However, how are we treating our body? Are we giving it the fuel, nutrients, and sleep necessary? More than likely you are feeding it junk lacking nutrients, sleeping less than what your body needs, and may even be ingesting various poisons whether from cigarettes, alcohol, or various medicines. No wonder our body cannot keep up with us! If our body cannot keep up with the day to day functions, how can we expect it to fight off infections?

There are natural ways to enhance and assist the body's natural ability to fight infection. Boosting the body's natural ability with natural substances is a great way to boost immunity while nurturing the body at the same time.

Garlic

Garlic is probably one of the most widely used natural antibiotics available whether we realize it or not. It has a proven history as being an effective antibiotic and antiviral. Garlic has been used to assist in killing antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as staph and strep.

Echinacea

Echinacea assists in fighting bacteria and viruses and is best taken at the onset of symptoms. Taking Echinacea for more than ten consecutive days may cause you to develop a resistance.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is used as both an antibiotic and an immune stimulant and has been shown to block strep from spreading in the body. It is not okay to take this if you're pregnant because it has the potential to be a uterine stimulant.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a powerful decongestant. You have probably used this before in products such as Listerine or Vick's VapoRub. It can be used externally or rubbed on externally.

Honey

Honey is a great topical antibiotic that can be used to treat cuts, burns, and bug bites/stings.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive Leaf Extract can be used in a wide variety of infections. Because of this it can be effective against colds and flu.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to build the immune system by increasing white blood cells in the body. White blood cells are used by the body to naturally fight infection.

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that is good to use for prevention as it helps to build resistance against infections.

The natural substances listed in this article are only a few of the many available, but are by far the most common and easily to be obtained.
