Natural Antioxidant Resveratrol Can Improve the Life of Arthritis Sufferer Without Destroying Their Kidneys

Susan Kaul
We have recently discovered that one of our dear writers here at Associated Content, Charlene Collins, is suffering from kidney problems secondary to her having to take a medication for her osteoarthritis pain. Over the past year one of her kidney function lab test result show an alarming increase. Her physician has advised her to no longer take the anti inflammatory that she was previously taking that has caused this problem.

Inflammation and pain of osteo and rheumatoid arthritis is life changing

My mother was racked with the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis, another inflammatory disease that attacks the joints. She too took medication for her arthritic pain, much the same as Charlene, but many many years ago, when testing and watchfulness was not nearly as extensive as today. My mother developed complete renal failure and had to live on dialysis for the remaining years of her life, as well as suffer with her arthritis pain.

In the past two years I have developed my mother's arthritis and it frightens me. I refuse to take the medications because I know the outcome. But that doesn't help with the daily pain and figuring out how to deal with it.

Healthy eating rich in antioxidants and resveratrol reduces inflammation

Then I read Charlene's recent article on other things that are good for anti-inflammation, more healthy and natural. And then I read this new study, which gives us all some new hope. So this article is for Charlene and myself and all the inflammatory sufferers out there. We can do something else about our pain and save our kidneys, with the added bonus of anti aging, anti cancer and anti heart disease.

Resveratrol is the plant extract that is in red and purple grapes. According to new research it appears to fight inflammation. And they say it is also showing signs of fighting aging as well.

Resveratrol is common in many foods but think color, reds and purples

Resveratrol is in other common foods that we put on the table everyday and didn't even realize, such as wine, peanuts, blueberries and cranberries. The extract resveratrol reduces the same inflammation that can lead to stroke, diabetes type 2 or cardiac disease.

The study had two groups of people, one receiving a placebo and the other 40 milligrams of resveratrol. They all had to take one pill a day for six weeks, not know which they were each taking. Blood tests were done at the beginning and the end of the six weeks, and also at one week and three weeks into the study.

Study shows resveratrol suppresses oxidants

Results did show a suppression of the oxidants or free radicals in the blood. These oxidants cause a release of pro inflammatory substances into the blood causing damage to the blood vessel lining. This blood vessel inflammation interferes with insulin. Causing insulin resistance and increasing risk of diabetes.

The group not taking resveratrol show no significant change in pro inflammatory markers.

These same oxidants or free radicals causing vessel damage are also creating inflammation in other areas of the body, such as organs and joints. So it is only logical to understand that increasing the antioxidants and in particular resveratrol will reduce that inflammation and decrease our discomfort.

So let's get it into us. Foods that have resveratrol include red and purple grapes and grape skins, red wines, in fact most berries, such as raspberries, mulberries, bilberries, blueberries and cranberries. Peanuts are good too. And one note about the wines, the longer the skin is on the grape, the higher the amount of resveratrol. It is better to be at least three weeks on the grape. Sadly most wines are only about one week. But you can find them.

We can make the right diet choices and increase our oxidants and improve our lives

So we need to make our diets rich in these choices. Not only will we be fighting cancer, heart disease and diabetes, but we are also helping our joints to feel better.
