Natural Bad Breath Remedies for Halitosis

W.S.
Bad breath, or halitosis, can be a very embarrassing and inconvenient problem. If you've tried over the counter solutions to no avail, why not try some of these natural remedies for halitosis? They are easy to try and most are widely available.

Natural Remedies for Halitosis - Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the most amazing natural remedies for halitosis. It is a great cleanser for the mouth and has the power to neutralize mouth odors. Scoop a teaspoon or so of baking soda in your hand and coat your damp toothbrush with it. Then, use it as you would any other toothpaste to neutralize bad breath.

Natural Remedies for Halitosis - Seeds

Another of the greatest natural remedies for halitosis is, believe it or not, seeds. Fennel seeds or anise seeds, when chewed, will freshen the breath and eliminate odors. If you have a severe case of halitosis, keep some of these seeds with you at all times to chew as needed. Anise seeds, especially, have a very pleasant flavor similar to licorice.

Natural Remedies for Halitosis - Herbal Mouthwash

Store bought mouthwashes can cause bad breath because of the alcohol they contain dried out the mouth and mucous membranes. An herbal mouthwash made with witch hazel is one of the best natural remedies for halitosis. The peppermint will freshen the breath and the witch hazel helps eliminate germs that cause odor in the mouth.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon witch hazel extract

½ teaspoon vegetable glycerin

3 drops peppermint essential oil

½ cup water

Directions:

Mix ingredients well and shake before using. Rinse the mouth with the mouthwash after you brush your teeth, or anytime you want to freshen the breath and prevent halitosis.

Natural Remedies for Halitosis - Acidophilus

Sluggish intestines can cause many problems including halitosis. To keep the intestinal tract healthy, eat a diet high in fiber including many fruits and veggies. In addition to this, take a supplement of acidophilus to keep a healthy population of beneficial intestinal flora. This dietary supplement is one of the best natural remedies for halitosis and can be found in capsule form at any health food store or nutrition store.

Natural Remedies for Halitosis - Water

Water is another of the best natural remedies for halitosis. Because dehydration causes sour breath and halitosis, just increasing your intake of this essential liquid can prevent halitosis. Drink at least six glasses of water per day to keep your body well hydrated and prevent bad breath.

This is a great article, but one word of caution to people with chronic bad breath--see your dentist. It can be gum disease that is causing the foul odor and requires dental intervention. I found out the hard way.
