Natural Bridge, located in Natural Bridge, Virginia is as a natural wonder as well as an historic landmark. As the name implies, Natural Bridge is a stone, nature made bridge that stands, or rather looms majestically, 215 feet above the ground.

Interesting History and Recent News about Natural Bridge:

George Washington, as legend goes, carved his initials on the rock formation while surveying in 1750 and the initials "G.W." are still visible today.

Thomas Jefferson purchased Natural Bridge in 1774 from King George III as a mountain retreat. In Jefferson's day, Natural Bridge, like Niagara Falls was one of the most visited wonders in America, inspiring the muse of both painters and writers.

Jefferson paid England 20 shilling for the rock formation and 157 acres land. That would have been the equivalent of about $2.40.

Recently that same landmark, which is now part of 1,600 acres, was sold for 6.5 million dollars. The property, which many were surprised to learn was privately owned, had been owned by eight individuals, three of whom were in their eighties. Some are expecting hotel renovations as well as the reopening of a dormant golf course.

What can visitors expect to do and see at Natural Bridge?

Visitors can take a short shuttle ride or a meandering walk down the Cedar Creek gorge to view the amazing wonder of the natural rock bridge. After passing under Natural Bridge, there is an easy walking path winding between Cedar Creek and wooded hills that feature Saltpeter Cave and Lace Falls.

Also on the trail is a replica of a Monacan village where visitors can experience what life would have been like some 300 years ago.

Natural Bridge and Cedar Creek nature trail are open year round. The Monocan Village is only open from April through November.

It 's an easy walk that is fairly stroller friendly and a peaceful stroll amidst nature for all ages. Even the hard to impress preteens say "wow!"

Accessing Natural Bridge:

Natural Bridge is located on U.S. 11 and Route 130, a fifteen minute drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is less than five minutes from exits off of I-81 or 15 minutes from exits off of I-64.

For some driving distance prospective, Natural Bridge is about 3 hours from Washington, D.C. or 2 hours from Virginia's capital, Richmond.

More to Do and See at Natural Bridge:

Natural Bridge also features the Natural Bridge Hotel. As a relative local I have not stayed there but many couples I know have went there for romantic get aways or anniversary retreats and been very happy with the hotel and restaurant accommodations.

There's also a gift shop, café, tavern and Colonial Dining Room as well as a toy museum, miniature golf, the Wax Museum and Factory Tour and Professor Cline's Haunted Monster Museum.

Attractions close by include the Natural Bridge Zoo and the Virginia Safari Park.

If you're visiting Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Natural Bridge is a worthy stop that is sure to awe all visitors.
