Natural Creamy Peanut Butter from Jif Review

Not Bad, but Not the Best

I can remember eating Jif peanut butter as a child but in my adult life I never purchased it because I preferred by natural and organic peanut butters. This was a trend that many people were involved in and so I started to see mainstream brands offering natural peanut butters and even organic peanut butters. Some that come to mind are Western Family releasing Organic Peanut Butter and Skippy releasing Natural Peanut Butter. Most recently I tried Natural Peanut Butter from Jif. Peanut butter is a huge part of my diet and I have high standards for what I consider a great peanut butter.

I have to admit that this particular peanut butter cannot be the best that I have had because it is not organic. Instead of comparing it to all peanut butters I just compared it to anything that I had previously tried that was considered natural. Unlike some natural peanut butters this one does not require you to have to stir it. Additionally, the Natural Creamy Peanut Butter from Jif did not require refrigeration, which was a bonus. Some times I will get a natural peanut butter that does not require refrigeration but I will refrigerate it anyway, because I find that it makes for a better texture. However, like my favorite natural peanut butters it does not contain any hydrogenated oils. Its ingredients were only peanuts, sugar, palm oil and less than 2% of salt and molasses. I thought that it was interesting that there was molasses in the peanut butter, but happy to see a more natural sweetener than sugar. I was quite pleased with this because the ingredients were about as good as it gets with a non-organic peanut butter. This was also true for the nutrition facts.

The jar of Natural Cream Peanut Butter from Jif contained about 15 servings, or 30 tablespoons, or what I like to look at as 15 peanut butter sandwiches. In each serving, two tablespoons of peanut butter, there was 190 calories with 130 calories from fat. There was 80 milligrams of sodium, 8 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugars, and 7 grams of peanut butter. In the vitamins and minerals section of the nutrition facts there was 2% listed for both calcium and riboflavin, 4% for iron, 10% for vitamin E and 20% for niacin. With such similar nutrition and ingredients I was thinking that the natural peanut butter was going to taste very similar to other natural peanut butters that I have tried.

I was not the only judge of the peanut butter. Skippy's Natural Creamy Peanut Butter was a favorite in our home but I decided to try the Natural Creamy Peanut Butter from Jif because it was on sale and slightly cheaper. Everyone in the house agreed that they liked the taste of the Jif natural peanut butter but liked the taste of other natural peanut butters better. I would guess that the difference in taste that we did not care for came from molasses, which is not standard in other natural peanut butters. You could not tell that there was molasses in the taste, but it definitely tasted different. With this in mind I plan on getting something else the next time that we get peanut butter. I am still glad that I tried this one because it rolled out whether or not we should stock up on it if it goes on sale. I would recommend it over the non-natural peanut butter that Jif offers because it does have better ingredients, but if you are looking for a peanut butter that is natural and good tasting I would suggest trying Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter over this.
