Causes of Bad Breath
Halitosis, also known as bad breath, can be caused by something you ate or by a more serious problem.
Occasional Halitosis
Bad breath caused by something you ate is usually temporary and easily dealt with.
The simplest way to deal with this type of bad breath is to avoid offending foods, such as onions and garlic.
Chronic Halitosis
Chronic bad breath is a sign that it may be time to visit your doctor. A thorough check-up will help determine if you have an infection or abscess that needs attention.
A few of the diseases that may cause foul-smelling breath are gum disease or abscesses of the mouth, infections of the tonsils or sinuses, and even stomach disorders.
Sometimes the only way to rid yourself of bad breath is to deal with the underlying condition.
Home Remedies
As with any treatment, what works for one, may not work for another. You may have to experiment until you find what works for you. Discuss any treatments with your physician, especially if you are taking medication or have other health problems.
Leave Bad Breath Behind
Mint leaves are a tasty breath freshener. A simple remedy for knocking out bad breath odor is chewing a few mint leaves. Parsley is another good choice. Chew a sprig of Parsley to freshen your breath.
Chew Your Way to Sweet Breath
Chew on a few Cardamom seeds, a clove, or fennel seeds to sweeten your breath.
Sip Some Tea
Mint tea is a good alternative to chewing mint leaves. Fenugreek tea works well also. Avoid adding sugar to your tea because sugar will encourage bacteria growth that can cause halitosis.
Other Odor Fighting Drinks
Drinks, such as fruit juice and vegetable juice, are beneficial in reducing bacteria that cause bad breath, but be careful to choose unsweetened juices.
Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth clean and avoid the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
Odor Reducing Foods
Choose fresh fruits and vegetables and limit processed foods and sweets to keep bad breath at bay.
Good Oral Hygiene
Battle that foul breath with your toothbrush. Brush after each meal with a baking soda paste. Don't forget to brush your tongue.
Gargle with warm salt water or hydrogen peroxide before brushing. Take care not to swallow either gargle mixture.
