Natural Disasters

Jillian McCoy
The world is on a road
bent on our destruction
Every day the news arrives
of another natural disaster.
Seas that rise like angry hands
Strange meteors above
Volcanoes like cauldrons bubbling over
Cities buried beneath the floods.
Talks of food shortage come and go
As weather fluctuates
Every year we hold our breath
and listen to the latest doomsday prophecy.
Were the ancient Mayans right?
Is 2012 the end?
Does the setting of their Fifth Sun signify
the end of this world's road?
How much disaster can we consider natural?
Are these apocalyptic signs
of the undoing of man
or is this merely "global change"?
If I stop holding my breath in waiting
for the swarms of locusts
will they finally come?

Nice! I've been thinking about all the recent natural disasters a lot lately.

Good stuff here, Jillian. Like the introduction of the locusts to the mix.

Great poetic expression to a condition that is being hastened by some who refuse to restrain the "swarm of locusts". Well done Jillian

A poem that was fun to read even though the theme was all that funny!

Nicely done, Jillian. I thought there were a lot of natural disasters occuring too until I started doing my "History in Haiku" series. There have been countless natural disasters: one earthquake in China killed 800,000 people--the worst in history.
