Natural Flea Control for Your Pets

How to Get Rid of Fleas and Keep Them Off

Carla Raley
Any pet owner will most likely eventually deal with fleas, or at the very least, be interested in how to keep their dog and consequentially their house and yard free of them. Here in Texas, it's pretty much a year round problem. In my quest to not only get rid of fleas, but to do it in a way that doesn't put chemicals on my animal's skin, and therefore on my children who pet them, I've found some natural remedies to prevent fleas.

One thing I do on a regular basis is to buy a bottle of inexpensive vegetable oil at the Dollar Store. Then I cut up a couple of garlic bulbs, and put them in the bottle of oil. I set the bottle in a sunny windowsill for at least a week. Then, once a week, I pour some of this oil on my dog's food. They absolutely love this. Garlic is a wonderful preventative for fleas. You can also just sprinkle garlic powder on the dogs good, but I think the dogs benefit from the oil, especially if dry dog food is their main food. Brewers yeast is yet another thing you can sprinkle on their food to help repel fleas. Both of these things are good for your pet in other ways, too, and will make them healthy as well as flea free.

You can grow the herb Pennyroyal in your garden or flower bed. Dry it and store it, and once a week or so, make a tea out of it. Put the tea in a spray bottle, and spray it on your dog's fur, and rub it in well. You can also use a homemade tea tree oil spray. Tea tree oil is good for any wounds the dog may have, also.

You can buy Diatomaceous earth at the feed store. This is a white powder made of finely ground shells. Sprinkle it on the dog's fur and even around their yard. You can also add this to their good, and it will help get rid of internal worms. They don't seem to notice it in their food. Be careful putting it around newborn puppies, which might have a problem breathing the powder in.

Be sure to treat your pet with these sprays outside and leave them out for a few hours, so that when the fleas jump off the dog, they will not jump into your home.

Once you've gotten the fleas off your dog, continue to use any of these suggestions on a regular basis to keep the fleas away.

Any of these suggestions are inexpensive and work very well. You don't need to use harmful chemicals to make your pet flea free!!
