Natural and Herbal Remedies for Insomnia

Chronic insomnia can wreak havoc on our lives and our mental state. Unfortunately it's often our mental state which causes the insomnia. Sometimes insomnia is caused by other health conditions and problems, but sometimes it's cause just by stress and anxiety. When you know what's causing your insomnia, the best approach is to treat the underlying cause instead of trying to simply treat the symptoms. Thankfully there are many natural and herbal options for treating both occasional and chronic insomnia problems.

Some herbal and alternative remedies for treating insomnia have been used for thousands of years. Most of the natural treatment techniques combine changes to lifestyle and diet, and they often include other techniques which involves learning relaxation skills, meditation, yoga, and the use of natural substances such as herbs. You may have even used some of these herbal remedies yourself without knowing it before. If your grandmother ever gave you chamomile tea for example, or recommended that you take it before bedtime, that was an herbal remedy. Chamomile tea is an excellent herb to help you relax so that you can sleep better.

Knowing whether or not there is an underlying cause for your insomnia can help you find remedies that work much faster. If for example you have a lot of stress and anxiety in your life, this could very well be what's causing your insomnia. An herbal remedy which works quite well for stress and anxiety is Valerian root. The standard California poppy flower can also be used to treat stress and anxiety to. Another excellent herbal remedy to use for insomnia and related causes of insomnia is skullcap. Skullcap can be taken internally like other herbal supplements, or you can put it into your bathtub water. Either way it helps relieve nervous tension, depression and stress.

In addition to chamomile, other types of tea which work wonderfully in helping you sleep include lemon balm, lime blossom, and passionflower. All of these herbs make tasty comforting teas for drinking before bedtime, and they all worked very well to help you relax so that you can sleep easier. You can even combine some or all of these herbs, and add a drop or two of valerian to make a custom soothing tea designed to meet your own tastes and sleeping needs.

In addition to taking herbs by now in supplement form, or in a tea form, you can also use them in herbal baths. Soaking in an herbal bath allows your body to absorb the benefits of the herb through its skin, and it also gives you the added benefit of soaking in a hot tub. Just the act of soaking in a tub alone often helps to relax your body, relieve stress, and puts you in a much better frame of mind to sleep very soundly each night.

Take the time to experiment with different herbs and herbal mixtures, and try to consult with an experienced herbalist to get additional information and knowledge that will help you cure your insomnia. Then be sure to deal with any underlying causes of the insomnia, and you will quickly find yourself sleeping soundly each and every night.
