Natural Lip Scrubs

Laura Leiva
During the winter, cold weather makes a mess of the skin and lips and no amount of moisturizer seems to help. Just as you would exfoliate the body to soften and smooth it, lip scrubs made of natural ingredients found around the home can restore the softness of lips. Having smooth lips is essential, not only to look and feel your best but also to ensure that lip glosses and lipstick adhere to the lips without drawing attention to cracks or dry spots.

Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrubs are one of the easiest and most common of natural lip exfoliators. To make your own scrub, mix one teaspoon of sugar with just enough water to form a paste. Rub into dry lips with a circular motion, and then rinse off with warm water and apply a moisturizing lip balm. If you have Vaseline around, use it to lock in moisture and keep lips smooth. Always apply a lip balm before going outside to keep them from drying out. Lip balms that contain an SPF are especially useful to prevent wind or sunburn to the lips.

Honey Scrub

Honey is beneficial for the skin because it moisturizes and cleanses all at the same time. Mix a teaspoon of honey with one teaspoon of baking soda. The baking soda works as an exfoliant, while the honey deep conditions the lips. Apply the lip scrub to the mouth and allow it to sit on the lips for a minute before rubbing off with warm water. Once the lips are clean, add a lip balm for extra moisturizing.

Honey Sugar Scrub

Since honey and sugar are both beneficial to softening and exfoliating lips, why not combine them for a scrub? Add one teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of sugar and mix together before applying to the lips. Once you rinse off the lips, add a drop or two of olive oil to the lips for extra moisturizing before bed.

If you don't have any items around the house to make your own lip scrub, you can soften lips with a toothbrush each morning before brushing the teeth. Take a dry toothbrush and gently buff the lips in a circular motion to remove dry areas. Once you have finished, rinse off the toothbrush and add a lip balm to the lips.
