Natural Medicine for Calming Autistic Children and ADHD

Safe and Effective Ways to Calm Anger and Behavioral Outbursts for Autistic Children

Joanna Ammons
I write this article with a heavy heart. My thoughts and prayers go to parents of autistic children who are beside themselves with fear when their child unexpectedly rips into a strong burst of uncontrollable anger. It is even more fearful when they injure themselves or could potentially injure those around them. I have consulted with many parents who are fearful of putting their children on dangerous psych medicines that potentially turn them into walking zombies. Although medication can help stop the problem, medications are not safe and have many side effects. If the child is literally out of control and you have no choice, then you must continue to seek a natural method to step down into. You are not solving the problem by keeping your child on medication, you are only suppressing it.

I first want to discuss some immediate calming solutions and how they can be safely used. Parents can use natural medicine solutions ahead of time to anticipate their child having an outburst in public or at school. If you are going to start using a natural solution for your child, it would be a good idea to test pilot and monitor their behavior on a day when you are both home and you can notice improvement and adjust dosages.

For children who have extreme anger outbursts and who are out of control, if you are looking to see natural calming in the same day within 30 minutes. I highly recommend "Relax Now" made by Herbalife. Relax Now is safe to use for adults and children who are highly stressed. The passion flower extract is compounded and ground well into the hard capsule to deliver immediate results. For children 7 years and older, I recommend taking one capsule 1-2 times per day. For under 7 years, I recommend breaking the capsule in half. You can also crush the capsule into a shake, smoothie or a bit of sorbet to get them to take it. Although passionflower extract is available in most health food stores, I have found most brands to not have a consistent way of compounding their supplement; as a result you could be taking too much or too little of it. I offer extended information on my health blog about "Relax Now".

In many cases children who get angry or excited very easily are that way because they have learning or developmental delays. Their world is moving faster than they can catch up. It can get very frustrating especially, when a child has to make a transition from an activity or a place, just when they got settled in.

Suntheanine is a natural green tea extract. It is safe for children to take and it helps to naturally focus the brain in a zen like state for better concentration and focus on activities. The best Suntheanine out there is made by "Natural Factors Chewable Suntheanine L- Theanine". It is a good tasting (but large round) orange flavored chewable tablet. Many parents have reported this product to be extremely useful in calming their children, helping them stay focused on activities and managing anger. Children feel like they can think being on this product.

Also Made by Natural Factors is "Serenity Formula". This supplement partners well with the Suntheanine chewable tablet. I personally give it to my daughter at the same time after she has her chewable. It works well with calming anger and if there is a mild outburst, you will notice that your child calmed than usual without natural supplementation.

I have often written about Bach Rescue Remedy. Rescue Remedy is a natural flower essence that can be used in water, or dropped under the tongue. I recommend children being given this if they are going into a stressful situation like a doctor's appointment or exam. It helps alleviate a traumatic experience. Rescue Remedy can be safely used with infants and even adults who need to buffer an extreme trauma or stressful event.

Every outburst of anger or behavioral episode has a reason. In my research the number one reason for an anger episode is constipation and/or related to encompresis. Many autistic children are known for holding in and controlling their bowel movements. This can be very painful and anger is often associated with that pain. Your child should be having a full bowel movement 4 to 6 hours after eating or in the very least, once a day. Often a pediatrician recommended laxative such as "Little Tummies" or "Fletchers" can help alleviate constipation. A good second reason for anger outbursts is gas. Simple intestinal gas can be painful. If you notice your child howling, screaming, taking in deep breaths, this is often the makings of gas or holding on to gas. Simethicone drops or Gas X can be very helpful in resolving this issue. Other reasons to look at; teeth pain, ear ache, ingrown toenails. These minor issues can make for quite an outburst. If the anger and the outbursts are intense and your child is inconsolable no matter what you try or do. You may want to rule out a serious health condition with blood testing or a scan by consulting with a neurologist or your trusted family physician.

Most parents jump to the thought that the anger or behavioral outburst is related to manipulation or a change of environment. Although that may be true, the reason for the outburst is secondary to a health issue or sensitivity. The origin of many outburst come from the fact your child's nervous system is very sensitive and combined with language or developmental delays, they are at a loss on how to effectively communicate their needs and wants. Nervous system sensitivity stems from having a vitamin B complex deficiency as well as a deficiency in calcium and magnesium. Please refer to my article on the" Natural Vitamin Protocols for Autistic Children" to learn more about helping strengthen your child's immune system and nervous system which is the root cause for these issues. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5927160/natural_vitamin_and_mineral_supplement.html?cat=68
