Natural Methods to Combat Anxiety

Simple and Alternative Ways to Reduce Anxiety and Panic Attacks

E. Wright
All of us have experienced stress in our lives at one time or another. Usually the symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and fatigue diminish within days. But can you imagine living this way every day for weeks or months at a time?

After suffering from a miscarriage last year, I encountered my first, second, and third panic attack within hours. My doctor prescribed Xanex to me, but warned against its addictive effect. As my anxiety symptoms worsened, I realized I could not rely on medications to cure it. I have seen friends and relatives in the past get hooked on their meds which caused terrible side effects. I promised myself years ago I would try not to put myself in that position, so I researched everything I could get my hands on regarding natural or alternative ways to combat anxiety disorder. What I found were simple, inexpensive natural methods to regain control of my life.

Exercise - It is not only a preventative measure. When you feel the onset of anxiety coming on, just take a quick jog or if indoors, try running in place, jumping jacks or yoga. After just a few minutes, the excess adrenaline will be absorbed.

Face your fears - Place yourself in situations that have become stressful for you. I had become terrified of driving for a reason that I cannot explain. So, I repeatedly made myself go to the car and drive around the block. A few days later I drove to the grocery store, and weeks later I drove on the interstate. You just have to prove to yourself that you'll live through the anxiety. Take small steps to reach big results.

Nutrition - Absolutely the most important step towards reducing anxiety. Caffeine and alcohol should be eliminated from your diet until you have the anxiety under control. Even then, sip slowly and monitor your reactions. Reduce the amount of sugar intake and carbs that are higher on the glycemic index. Eat foods that are rich in tryptophans and potassium. Tryptophan aids in the production of serotonin, which can altar your mood in a safe manner. Bananas are a great pick- me -up throughout the day. Keep hydrated with water during the afternoon and hot tea for breakfast and before bedtime.

If you believe you may have an anxiety or panic disorder, please consult a physician. After following the above methods, my anxiety diminished greatly within two months. One year later and I hardly ever think about it, but have stuck to maintaining a nutritious diet and exercising frequently.
