Natural Remedies for Amenorrhea

What is amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea is a the medical term used to describe the absence of menstruation in women. If amenorrhea occurs before the age of 16 or 17, a case of primary amenorrhea exists while if the process occurs after this age a secondary type of amenorrhea manifests.

There are certain temporary situation when women can stop menstruating: pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. In the first two instances amenorrhea should be temporary while the last case is definitive. If amenorrhea occurs for more than 3 months a medical professional should be consulted.

What causes amenorrhea?

Body weight, diet, stress, health issues or problems, and certain medicines can be the cause of primary or secondary temporary amenorrhea. Women who are underweight can stop having regular menstruation periods while obese women can also have amenorrhea. This cause may be exacerbated with an improper diet, which may cause menstruation to stop. A healthy weight and well balanced diet are key to avoid ammenorrheic periods.

Excessive or prolonged stress may also cause period of inactivity of menstruation. This is because during stress dangerous cortisol molecules are released in excess and this may cause inflammation and an imbalance or hormones in women.

In addition, excessive exercise, especially in body builders, anemia, hormone imbalances, discontinuation or use of birth control pills are all known risk factors for amenorhea to appear.

Natural Remedies For Amenorrhea:

Ginger tea: taking ginger tea can help start the menstruation in women who may be suffering from amenorrhea. In addition, this tea is said to alleviate symptoms of menstruation such as cramps and abdominal pains.

Beet juice: a great remedy to start you menstruation if it has stopped. Taking various cups of beet juice per day will help you getting your menstruation.

Native American Chippewa women used natural remedies made from herbs for amenorrhea. Among them, one called Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides), which used alone or in combination with other natural herbs can regulate and induce the menstrual cycle. It also can relieve painful cramps.

Others herbs used to treat this condition includes: mother wort, alfalfa seed, asafetida, parsley, yarrow, rue, marigold, and many others

Temporary amenorrhea may not be a problem, especially if lactation, or pregnancy is the cause of it. However, prolonged amenorrhea may be a serious health issue for women. Natural remedies for amenorrhea can help but always ask your doctor before trying any new herbal remedy.
