Let me begin by saying...avoid caffeine at all costs.
First thing you want to do is be aware of what triggers your attacks. If you feel you are in a situation where you could have a panic attack, get out of the situation. Some people are overwhelmed by large crowds et cetera. Try to avoid those situations as much as possible.
If you begin to feel a panic attack coming on, get to somewhere quiet and cool and semi-dark. Since an anxiety attack can cause heavy and hard breathing, do not lie down as this can make the breathing worse. Make sure you are in a very cool room or place since being hot can also cause breathing to become harder. Take slow deep breaths (unless hyperventilating...then, yes, the old breath into a paper bag does work), focus your attention on you breathing, do your best to relax your body and muscles, and let your mind go to somewhere soothing (i.e. a waterfall, an open field of flowers, or other).
Another thing to try is walking around. I know that sounds kind of weird, but it works. Since walking helps to relax muscles and clear the mind it can help an anxiety attack to lessen in severity. The best place to do this is outside weather permitting.
One thing that you really have to train yourself to do, but it can be done, is to almost "hypnotize" yourself. The best thing to do is "practice" this when you are not having an attack so you will be prepared for one. You want to sit down but in a position that is as straight as possible since this will allow your airway to be completely open. Place your arms out straight on the arms of the chair, close your eyes, and take a deep breath in while counting to five. Slowly let the air out while counting to ten. Continue doing this until the breathing and counting are all you are thinking about. Keep doing it until you feel totally relaxed and calm. This also helps to prevent anxiety attacks from happening.
If the anxiety attacks get so severe that you do have to take something start out with things such as natural vitamins and herbal remedies. One such herbal remedy is called ViLift (www.vilift.com). I have to be honest and say I, myself, have not taken this. However, I know someone who swears by it and says it is a wonder treatment for anxiety attacks.
Another one is Seredyn (www.seredyn.com). Again, I know someone who has taken this natural treatment and has had great success with it. Since it is natural there are no harsh side affects.
Since anxiety attacks are actually and usually caused from adrenal fatigue and overload, you need to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients, vitamins, enough rest, and exercise. Simply taking a multi-vitamin can ward off anxiety attacks. Just make sure the vitamins you take are all natural also. It is best to get these at a trusted store that sales just vitamins et cetera since most of the employees are trained and knowledgeable about the products. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Getting dehydrated can cause other health problems that can trigger an attack.
One other thing that is worth a try (it does work for me) is to drink herbal decaffeinated tea. Something like Chamomile is a good one. However, the one that works best for me is a decaffeinated peppermint flavored tea. There is something about the smell and taste of peppermint that seems to help relieve my symptoms of an anxiety attack. Also, a naturally fruit flavored organic tea is another good one to try (whichever flavor you like).
So, from first hand experience I can tell you that an anxiety attack is one of the worst things in the world to go through. Yet, if you know first of all how to prevent them and second know how to treat them, then you can get through them. I hope these tips help.
