Beverages are a favorite among parents and children. The most advised juice is prune juice with water added. Prunes have had a reputation for a long time as a natural laxative, but the taste leaves something to be desired. Other juices include mixed fruit juice, apple juice, pomegranate juice and grape juice. Other beverages are ginger tea, water and a glass of warm milk before bed.
Flaxseed is a wonder for both adults and children. Sprinkle a teaspoon of flaxseed over a meal to get the child to ingest it, or boil a small amount of water and flaxseed for a drinkable potion. Flaxseed is both a natural laxative and a preventative measure.
Bran and fiber is important for good digestive health. Getting the child to eat bran cereal is a wonderful way to treat constipation. Of course, most children are picky eaters and don't want bran cereal. A sneaky way around it is to feed a dose of Metamucil or a similar product into a food product like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a small shake.
Certain foods that contain roughage can be invaluable. Apples with peelings, potatoes with peelings, grapes, blueberries and more can help clear the constipation and promote a healthy digestive tract.
A new product is making quite a splash with people old and young alike that suffers with recurring or constant constipation. Probiotic foods, yogurt for instance, contain specific bacteria that the digestive system needs. The digestive tract normally keeps a healthy supply of the bacteria flora, but sometimes the flora can become unbalanced due to antibiotics and other causes.
Believe it or not, baths also made the list. Many swear that a bath will make it possible to "go" without ingesting anything. This is a good thing to try if the child won't eat or drink. It is warned however that it might take a few dips for the complete effect.
A belly rub might also be just the thing to encourage a movement. With your fingertips, lightly rub an increasing and decreasing circle on the belly between the belly button and lower. Do not push, but rather let the muscles feel the light sensation and let them react. The hands on treatment will give not only constipation relief but a comforting as well.
Parents and caregivers should keep in mind that constipation can be a sign of a serious condition. If you notice that the child has a constant or frequent problem with constipation then the pediatrician should be consulted. Or if the child is in pain, go to the ER if the pediatrician isn't available. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.
