Proper Diagnose of Enlarged Prostate
If you suspect something is going wrong with your prostate or even if you your sexual functioning or urination is inhibited in some way, it is important to investigate whether or not the prostate is responsible. Also, if it is responsible, getting the right diagnose behind what is going on with it is essential.
Your doctor may want to refer you to a urologist and perform tests. You will need your condition to be diagnosed so you can know exactly what kind of treatment you need. And even if you choose to go the natural route, it is still a good idea to be under the advisement of a medical profession so that you can examine all your options.
Healthy Diet and Lifestyle
In general, if you determine that you have an enlarged prostate, the number one thing to do is to make sure that you have a healthy diet and great lifestyle habits. Frequent exercise, kegel exercises, and a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins and fats can go a long way to help keep your body in balance and to help keep the prostate healthy. It is also important to drink plenty of water.
Saw Palmetto and Other Herbs
Saw Palmetto, or Serenoa repens as it is known in the scientific community, is the number one herb that is used for prostate problems, most especially Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate. The main reason is that it has been shown to inhibit the hormone that causes the enlargement in the first place. Consult with your doctor before you start using it, just in case. Other herbs that can also help include pygeum and stinging nettle - but saw palmetto is the main choice.
Vitamins and Minerals
There are also some vitamins and minerals that can help with prostate problems - most specifically lycopene, which is part of the beta carotene family and present in tomatoes and tomato products, and zinc which is present in foods such as pumpkin seeds. It is also a good idea to take a multivitamin and mineral supplement to make sure that the body has what it needs to stay healthy in general. Alternatively, you can also supplement with pumpkin seed oil and extract.
A Lifestyle Strategy
Dealing with an enlarged prostate is all about having an overall lifestyle strategy. Taking herbal supplements, having a healthy lifestyle, and taking vitamins and minerals is an important part of the strategy.
