1. Yoga/meditation- There are quite a few different yoga techniques a person can find in a bookstore or on-line that can help you to relax. One of these methods that I like to use is called Pranayama, which means "breath control". Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit to practice your technique. The main thing to remember with yoga is to make sure you are not trying too hard to "do it right". If you find yourself straining or uncomfortable, stop and take a break, or find a more comfortable position for you. It's OK to practice yoga at your own pace, because everyone is different. There are also a few different ways to meditate. One technique that I have found to be effective is to just focus on your breathing, and let any thoughts that may arise in your mind to come and go, without resistance.
2. Exercise- Any time you do even a mild workout, your body will respond in many ways to benefit your health. One of these ways is by releasing chemicals into your brain that make you feel good by relieving stress, which I believe is the main reason for depression. Even just a fast paced walk can be very beneficial to your overall wellbeing for years to come.
3. Find a hobby- Think of some different things that you like to do or would like to do, like reading, gardening, sewing, painting, playing a musical instrument, taking pictures, playing a sport, or dancing. Everyone needs a little time for themselves in life, and it's emotionally healthy to do something that you enjoy. It can take your mind off day to day worries and remind you of just some of the many wonderful things there are in life!
4. Hang out with a friend/family member- You may want to have a conversation with a loved one. This can renew relationships and bring harmony into your life. Everyone needs someone to talk to at times, and you might just be surprised at some of the things you end up finding out about yourself or the loved one.
Depression can be a burdensome illness, and it takes some time to overcome it, as it did for me. But be patient and have faith in yourself and you will eventually see some light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck with everything and may you find inner peace.
