There are many products on the market both over the counter and doctor prescribed that promise to end the sleepless nights. The problem is that most of them not only involve putting man-made chemicals into your body but they can also be extremely addictive.
As you toss and turn, night after night, you think: there has to be a better way! Aren't there any natural remedies I can try? Yes, there sure are! I'll outline 10 for you and with an open mind and a little luck my hope is that you find one that really works for you.
Before starting any of the following ideas be sure to visit a doctor. Because chronic insomnia can be an underlying cause of a serious medical condition it's important to rule that out first. Once you have the all clear then read on for some natural relief.
Warm milk. Mom was right. This warm beverage does help to relax you and put you in a state conducive to sleep. And it's good for you to boot!
Don't push it. If after 20 minutes are so you are not asleep try to get up and do something else for a short while before trying again. It will cut down on frustration which can actually keep you awake.
Cut the caffeine. It's a stimulant and can wreck havoc on your sleep. If you can't give it up completely limit yourself and be sure to drink it early in the day.
Say no to booze. Although it seems like a stiff drink is just the ticket to relaxing enough for sleep the opposite is actually true. While it may initially put you to sleep when you wake up later it serves a rebound effect that will keep you from falling back to sleep.
Let it soak. This is my own personal favorite. A hot bath a couple hours before bed is a relaxing way to get you in the right frame of mind for sleep.
Put a plug in it. Is every little noise keeping you up? Invest in a good pair of earplugs and you will soon be oblivious to it all.
Preserve the sanctity of the bedroom. Use your room for sleep and only sleep. If you are going to read, watch tv, or do anything else not sleep related confine it to another room.
Stay on schedule. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. It helps set your bodies natural rhythm and makes getting to sleep that much easier.
Nix the nap. Getting sleep at other times during the day may interfere with your being able to nod off at night.
Get comfortable. Make sure you bed and pillows are comfortable enough for you and not sabotaging your efforts.
I hope that one or more of these tips gets you the rest you need and that all of your dreams are good ones. Sleep tight!
