Natural Remedies for Menstrual Cycle Problems

Relieve Menstrual Cycle Discomfort Without the Risk of Side Effects

Kathy Wiehl
Most women experience a monthly menstrual cycle for many years. For women who don't experience problems during menstruation, this isn't such a big deal. However women who experience more severe symptoms grow to dread that time of the month. Studies have shown that frequent use of over the counter medicines can pose health risks, so many women choose to treat excessive menstrual symptoms naturally. Natural remedies may help avoid undesirable symptoms as well as harmful side effects.

Severe Menstrual Cramping
Mild cramps are tolerable by most women, but severe cramping can be nearly debilitating to some. Herbal natural remedies for menstrual cycle cramps include teas made with chamomile or ginger root. You may find that taking supplemental calcium, magnesium, zinc and b vitamins help relieve pain. Maintaining a regular exercise routine may also keep cramps at bay. Aim to exercise at least 30 minutes three times a week for best results.

Fatigue
Fatigue is a very common problem during the menstrual cycle. Consuming iron-rich foods such as spinach, raisins and blackstrap molasses can help relieve these symptoms. You can also take iron supplements such as Floradix.

Bloating
Many women complain of bloating during menstruation. One of the best ways to avoid this is to drink plenty of water. Experts recommend drinking ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. For example, a 150 pound woman should drink 75 ounces of water daily. Avoiding salty and processed foods can also help reduce bloating. Be sure to read food labels to be sure that the foods you eat do not contain excessive amounts of sodium, especially during your menstrual cycle.

Moodiness
The fact that women tend to get a little moody during the menstrual cycle is the butt of many jokes. However for the women experience mood swings, this is anything but funny. Be sure to allow time each day to take a mental health break, especially during your menstrual cycle. Getting adequate sleep, a balanced diet and reducing stress levels can be helpful. St. John's wort can also help, though it needs to be taken daily throughout the entire cycle and not only during menstruation. Taking flaxseed can also be helpful.

If you try all of these methods for a few months and don't find relief, it may be time to bring these menstrual cycle symptoms to your doctor's attention. Although natural remedies are the healthiest way to deal with any health problems, don't allow yourself to suffer when they don't work.
