Natural Remedies for Summer Heat

What to Use for Face, Hair and Body in Warm Weather

Studies say that thirty minutes a day of non-direct sunlight is good for you, but are there any benefits from scorching heat? As summer approaches, the thermostat inches higher, creating new sets of problems for face, hair and body.

In response, try the following quick and inexpensive remedies as the weather heats up!

A fantastic warm-weather product is the tried-and-true staple WITCH HAZEL. Soothing and cooling, witch hazel is a natural astringent. Wipe your face with witch hazel on a cotton square to rid your skin of excess oil. You can also rinse your hair with witch hazel, especially if your scalp is tender or oily. Witch hazel is available at supermarkets and drugstores.

Another oily hair remedy is APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. After washing with shampoo or other products, rinse your hair with water and a cup of apple cider vinegar. It will leave your hair extremely clean and fresh-smelling. Buy a large container at a low price at supermarkets.

A simple way to cool down and lower your body temperature during the day is to run your wrists under COOL WATER. Many people avoid their wrists when washing their hands, but the cooling effect is immediate. Wet a paper towel to put around your ankles or over the back of your neck.

Instead of waving a paper in front of your face to fan yourself - doing so can convey boredom, especially in an office meeting - invest in PAPER FANS. They are cheap, pretty and they work! The fans can be purchased at party stores or Asian-themed stores.

While you're at the store, pick up some PAPER PARASOLS. They can diffuse the sun and create a bit of your own shade, plus they're colorful and evoke the feel of summer. (Of course, you're wearing sunscreen and sunglasses... and if the sun is that unbearable, do everything you can to go inside.)

In addition to sunburn, summer is also about bug bites. A remedy for both is Band Aid's ANTI-ITCH GEL (External Analgesic), a miracle worker. Spread a thin layer over skin to stop itching and irritation from burns, bites, allergic reactions and even shaving (especially those prone to redness, bumps or ingrown hairs). It has a distinct, clean smell and feels cool to the touch.

At the end of the day, even if you've already taken a shower, cool down by washing your feet in a tub of cool water. Slice LEMONS for a fresh smell and at-home spa treatment.

Regular towels can seem heavy and too plush during hot weather. Instead, try CLOTH DIAPERS - no, not the kind that people clean their cars with. These are extremely thin and gauzy, perfect for drying hair, feet and face (I prefer them for my face all year around.) They are inexpensive, come in packs of 12 and are simple to wash and dry.

Finally, before you get into bed, put tomorrow's underwear or tank top into the refrigerator - it may seem silly that night, but you'll be thankful in the morning!
