To avoid getting mastitis you should make sure that you are eating healthy and taking care of yourself. Sometimes this is a challenge for new mothers because they are so caught up in everything else that has to be done. Adjusting to a new child can be a challenge, but you must remember to take care of yourself. Many people will say that when you get mastitis it is the body's way of telling the mother to slow down and take a break. Mastitis can also be a sign that you are dehydrated.
Some medications are okay while breastfeeding, but it is a smart choice to reduce or stop all medications while breastfeeding. To help mastitis after you know that you have it, there are many options. I am going to tell you about the more natural ways to help get rid of it. The first is to nurse your child as much as possible. Nurse the child first on the affected side. The mother should get as much rest as possible. In between feedings mothers should switch between warm and cold compresses. Start with a warm compress and allow it to sit there for fifteen to twenty minutes. Switch to a cold compress then. Follow the same time frame. Just continue switching them back and forth until the next feeding. You should also massage the breast during feeding. Massage from the affected area to the nipple.
Taking warm showers and allowing the warm water to run over the affected breast can help also. Many mothers have found that you can cut a slice of raw potato to fit over the affected area, then leave it there overnight and it can draw out the infection. If you ever find that 24-48 hours after trying and continuing these treatments that the mastitis is not getting any better, then you should seek a doctor as you may need an antibiotic treatment.
It is a good idea to write down things that you are wearing when you get mastitis. Some mothers have found out that a certain article of clothing can trigger your body getting mastitis. Many mothers choose to be braless as much as possible. Tight fitting clothes have been found to be the culprit with many mothers. I hope that this article has helped you in learning about mastitis and ways to help you.
