Natural Methods to Quit Smoking

Lobelia is also sometimes referred to as the Indian tobacco. Native American Indians have been using Lobelia medicinally for hundreds of years. Some individuals describe Lobelia as a nicotine replacement. Unfortunately, the herb can be toxic if used inappropriately. Known for helping to clear out lungs and to aid in breathing, Lobelia is available in herbal form and in supplement form. Some health food stores carry Lobelia or it can be ordered online for under $5 a bottle. Taking more than the daily recommended amount of Lobelia a day can make smokers feel sick, however, taking it on a regular basis may naturally decrease the desire to smoke.

St. John's Wort is often used as a natural supplement to treat anxiety and depression. Since individuals often become depressed and extremely anxious during smoking cessation, especially in the early days, St. John's Wort is a natural supplement that can be extremely helpful in quitting. Because St. John's Wort cannot be mixed with many prescribed medications, it's important for individuals who are taking other supplements and prescribed medications to check with a pharmacist or doctor before beginning St. John's Wort.

Passionflower is also available in supplement form and is commonly taken to reduce anxiety. It is safe to take Passionflower and St. John's Wort together. Dosages should be given throughout the day. Passionflower is also sometimes used as a natural treatment for nervous problems.

Many smokers describe sleep difficulties, especially in the early stages of quitting. Taking Valerian Root herb in supplement form just before bed can help relax an individual who is going through smoking cessation and help them fall asleep. If a smoker is having trouble relaxing physically and seems to be twitching or moving a lot, the individual can also rub pure lavender essential oil into their temples and muscles, which will act as a natural (and safe) muscle relaxer).

The smell and taste of peppermint can be beneficial to someone quitting smoking. Sniff peppermint oil or add a few drops of edible peppermint oil to water (be sure to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day while quitting smoking) or sucking on peppermint candy whenever the urge to smoke arises. Smokers should learn what triggers them to smoke and find alternative methods of stress relief in order to be successful.
