Natural Sore Throat Remedy

Katherine Huether
I don't like being sick and having a sore throat is one of the worst things - especially if they're chronic. I've found that natural remedies can provide a lot of relief and can help your body stimulate its own healing. Some of these remedies are also quite delicious!

Eat Some Honey

Use raw honey because it is unpasteurized. One of the reasons why honey is such good medicine is because of the enzymes that are present in its raw state. Pasteurization kills these enzymes. However, if you don't have any honey, any honey will work - just not as well. Eat it by the spoonful, stir it into hot water or tea, or suck on honey lozenges. It helps sooth the throat.

Drink Sage Tea

In my training to become an herbalist, I learned that the established remedy for throat discomfort is sage tea. Just take the sage right from your pantry and brew it into a tea. Use 1 tsp. of the dried herb for each cup of water. For extra oomph, stir in a teaspoon of honey. Drink several cups a day until symptoms subside.

Natural Lozenges

Lozenges are your greatest friend if you have a sore throat. You can pick any lozenge that you like. However, in keeping with the "natural" theme I suggest you choose natural, soothing ingredients. Look for things like honey, sage, chamomile, and slippery elm. As long as it's labeled as effective against sore throats, it's a good bet. Follow the instructions on the package to make sure you are using them correctly.

See a Doctor

When it comes to sore throats, there could be many causes. To make sure that you don't have something else wrong, I would visit a doctor. They can help you determine what the sore throat is from and whether or not these home remedies will actually work. For example, my cousin has throat problems but it's actually related to her acid reflux. Getting that situation under control will help her sore throat go away. It's important to be under a doctor's care just in case.

If you have a sore throat, trying out a natural sore throat remedy can really bring relief and can even help encourage the body to heal. However, to make sure that you have the proper diagnosis, it is important to also see your doctor. This will help insure that you don't damage your body and can get better as quickly as possible.
