5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a natural plant extract that converts into serotonin in the brain. Serotonin controls mood, behavior, appetite, and sleep within an individual, and 5-HTP is helpful to those experiencing low levels of this chemical. Ray Sahelian, M.D. formulated a 5-HTP product by Physician Formulas, and he recommends 50 to 100mg per day, taken on an empty stomach. This product should not be used for long periods of time. Since the product debuted in 1994, there are no long term effects known, but the current side effects include nausea, loose stool, and headaches.
The Seredyn formula contains three active ingredients to diminish anxiety symptoms. L-Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea, and its job is to increase feelings of calm, while encouraging a stronger sense of focus. Passion Flower extract stills an anxious, panicked mind and is especially helpful to those experiencing withdrawal symptoms from prescription anti-anxiety meds. Valerian extract found in Seredyn is clinically proven to alleviate insomnia in anxiety sufferers. Reactions such as fatigue, upset stomach, grogginess, and restlessness are rare, but keep in mind the recommended dosage is one or two capsules up to three times daily. The Seredyn natural supplement can be purchased online, along with a wealth of information on the product.
Kava kava is taken from the root of a shrub named the pepper plant in the South Pacific Islands. Effects are usually felt within an hour or two, and can put you in a state of relaxation while lessening muscle tension. Sometimes a mild euphoria can occur, also helping you to become more sociable in a comfortable environment. It is recommended to take a few hours before bedtime, being that it may cause drowsiness. Take one tablet of kava kava (300mg) per day, but do not exceed three days per week. Side effects include loss of balance and disorientation and should not be taken with acetaminophen, such as Tylenol.
Anxiety does not have to rule your life. This article is just a brief summary of what some supplements can do for your anxiety. There are safe, proven alternatives to medications such as Xanax or Zoloft. However, always refer to a physician before discontinuing use of a medication.
