Natural Ways to Keep Animals Out of Your Gardens

Don't Buy Expensive, Toxic Commercial Products

Every year I plant one vegetable garden and several flower gardens on my property. And, every year, without fail, the animals come in from the woods to feast on my plants and produce. I'd get frustrated by this constant harrassment, except for the fact that I have an arsenal of remedies I use to protect my gardens. Every one of my remedies is a tried-and-true method for making deer, raccoons, possum, groundhogs, and other pests leave my gardens alone. These methods never harm animals, but it sure sends them packing!

1. Deer Don't Like Smelly Hair and Soap Borders
Did you know that deer normally run away when they smell humans? It's true! So, in order to take advantage of this fact, I use human hair to keep Bambi and friends far away from my vegetable garden. Simply sprinkle hair clippings around the perimeter of your garden, and the deer won't bother it.

Of course, if you cut your family's hair at home, you'll have an endless supply of hair to use. Otherwise, just check with your local barber shops and styling salons. They're usually glad to get rid of hair clippings.

You can use bars of smelly soap to deter the deer from your vegetable garden too. The process is a little more complicated than using the human hair. But, this method works well too. If you already have a fence in place around your garden, all you need to do is drill a hole clear through several bars of soap.

Here are some tips to help you out: 1) The smellier the soap is, the better. 2) You'll need to use at least one bar of soap per garden side. 3) You can use a long nail or screw to make the holes in the soap.

Then, tie pieces of string through the holes and attach the soap to the fence. Just like the human smell, the odor of the soap will deter deer from your vegetable garden.

You can also place rags that have been sprayed with Avon™ Skin So Soft Bath Oil around both your vegetable and flower gardens keeps all kinds of animals and other pests away. Or, try spraying the ground around your garden with straight SSS Bath Oil that hasn't been diluted.

2. One Greasy Remedy to Dispel Cottontails
Rabbits love vegetables. They especially love fresh veggies straight out of the ground. They eat carrots, lettuce, and other goodies we gardeners plant. One thing that Bugs and his friends don't like is bacon grease. To keep rabbits away from your garden, sprinkle some bacon grease around the outside of it. One sniff, and they should head off in another direction.

Unfortunately, if you have flowers such as marigolds and wildflowers planted, the rabbits will probably head for them instead of eating your vegetables. To keep out of there, you can place mothballs around the perimeter of the flower bed.

3. It Takes Work to Fend Off Keen Raccoons.
It's not surprising that a raccoon's diet becomes mainly veggies and plants when the calendar turns to summertime. I used to have problems with raccoons eating the corn in my garden. So, I set up a single string fence around my vegetable garden. I then hooked several aluminum pie pans to it. The rattling pans worked for awhile, but raccoons are wily animals that don't fool easily. Once they got used to the noise, and realize the pans couldn't hurt them, they returned to eat the corn.

So, I got more radical. I sprinkled ground up Cayenne peppers around my stalks of corn. The peppers kept the raccoons away, along with every other type of animal.

Another easy way to keep raccoons out of your garden is to place a portable radio in your garden. Turn it on to the noisiest station you can find. Set the volume so the racket won't disturb your family or your neighbors. Just make sure it's loud enough to be heard throughout your garden. The noise will keep coons and other animals who are scared of the noise away.

  • Simply sprinkle hair clippings around your garden, and the deer won't bother it.
  • Sprinkle bacon grease around your garden perimeters to deter rabbits.
  • Moth Balls around your flower bed will keep rabbits away too.
Fencing is probably the best way to keep animals out of your veggie and flower gardens. Electric fence is the most effective deterrent. However, deer can easily jump fences, while smaller pests can easily dig underneath them.

Cayenne pepper will keep the critters away. But, I use Shot Gun Dear and Rabbit repellent. And since it has cayenne pepper in it, I bet it'll keep the raccoons away too.

This is useless. You clearly have never had to deal with possums before.

I'll have to try the pepper. I discovered a hole in each of my raised beds. I know it's not my dog as the garden is gated and she can't get in.

Placing moth balls around your garden and yard is a another way to keep skunks away. This also works well with other animals such as moles, and chipmunks. The smell from the moth balls will repulse animals and they will keep away from your yard and garden. Moth balls have such a strong smell, especially to small animals, that your garden will be animal and rodent free. Just make sure if you have children, that you keep them away from the moth balls, as ingesting them can be harmful.

Press the lid securely in place on all garbage cans. Secure the lids to the garbage cans with rope or sturdy cords. Most raccoons invade human space when they are looking for food. If the food supply is easier to obtain elsewhere, they are more likely to leave your property alone.

Step 2Place a battery operated, waterproof portable radio near any site of suspected raccoon activity. Turn the radio on. The volume does not have to be high. Raccoon's do not like being around humans and will be discouraged by the sound of human voices.

Step 3Install motion sensor activated outdoor lighting near any site of suspected raccoon activity. As nocturnal animals, raccoons do not like bright light and will avoid it when possible.

Step 4Spray a small amount of ammonia in and around all garbage cans. Raccoons don't like the smell and will be discouraged from digging around in your trash.

Step 5Remove all pet food from accessible outdoor locations by sundown. Remove all sources of water, wi
