Natural Ways to Relieve an Itch

Karen Bishop
Everyone has to scratch an itch at least once a day. Most of the time it is minor, but for some the itching disrupts their lives and sleep. Scratching too hard can also damage your skin. There are natural ways to relieve itching with things you have in your home. I will also share with you which of these remedies helped relieve my itchy skin.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Baking Soda

Baking soda relieves many kinds of itches. If you have itching all over, add 1 cup of baking soda to a tub of warm water. Soak for 30 to 60 minutes in the tub and air dry. For small, localized areas, mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Apply to the skin. Do not apply to skin that is broken. I have used baking soda paste many times over the years. It has always provided immediate, long-lasting relief for me.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Lemon

Lemons contain anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties. Use the juice from a real lemon, not lemon juice in a bottle. Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the fresh lemon juice on the itchy skin. Allow to air dry.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Mint

Mint is used to treat general itchiness and hives. It contains anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties when applied to skin. Mint is easily absorbed when applied topically to the skin.

Make a mint tea rinse by placing 1 ounce of dried mint leaves in 1 pint of boiling water. Cover and let the mixture cool. Strain into a jar, dip a clean cloth in the tea and apply to the itch as needed.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a great way to relieve the itch. The properties which sooth the burn help to reduce the itch. Snap a leaf off the aloe vera plant, slice the leaf in half and rub the gel on the itchy area. I have used aloe vera for itchy skin many times. It helped ease mild itching for me.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Tea Tree Oil

Have an itch that won't stop? Apply a couple of drops of tea tree oil to the itchy skin as needed. This is one of the best natural ways to relieve a persistent itch. I have used it many times to relieve my most persistent itches.

Natural Ways to Relieve the Itch: Cinnamon and Honey

Make a paste with equal amounts of honey and cinnamon powder. Apply to the area of itchy skin.

These are some natural ways to relieve the itch. Use one of the above remedies the next time you have the urge to scratch and save your skin.
