Natural Ways to Relieve Tired Eyes

Home Remedies to Soothe Sore Eyes

There are a number of reasons why your eyes might feel sore and irritable. Allergy to dust, cigarette smoke or cosmetic products, a lack of sufficient sleep, eye strain through spending too long at a computer or reading small print can all cause bloodshot eyes, dry eyes, twitching or itchy eyes. Seasonal allergies can also irritate the eyes and cause headaches.

One of the most natural and soothing methods of relieving sore eyes is a hot compress. Applying this to the eyes for five to ten minutes can be effective and relaxing. The compress should be hot but not scalding. You might follow this with a gentle eye massage by rolling your fingers in a circular motion against the eyelids.

Homeopathic remedies for sore and tired eyes include Apis if the eye is red and swollen and Belladonna for dry, bloodshot eyes. Euphrasia helps soothe sore eyes and Eyebright eye lotion can help soothe itchy and tired eyes.

Herbal remedies include bathing the eyes in eyebright tea. First sterilise the liquid by simmering for ten minutes then cool and strain the tea through a sterile gauze pad or cheese cloth into an eyebath. Follow this procedure all the time; in other words don't use any leftover tea to soothe the eyes on a later occasion. Some people find it helps to soak cotton wool balls in milk or rose water and to place these on sore eyes.

There are a number of relaxing home remedies that might help ease sore eyes. Lying, or sitting with your head back with a slice of cucumber, slice of peeled potato or tea bags that have been soaked in warm water placed over eyelids for thirty minutes might reduce redness and irritation. A warm chamomile teabag also helps calm sore eyes when placed over the eyelids.

If your eyes feel gritty and tired, gently wash with cooled, boiled water.

To prevent getting sore eyes, never touch your eyes with unwashed hands. It isn't a good idea to share towels or eye make-up. Throw away old eye shadows and mascaras. Remove eye make-up every day to allow the skin to breathe. Fans can cause dry eyes as can windy weather. Take regular breaks if you work with computers or if you read a lot. Air conditioning can also irritate the eyes.
