Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants Without Killing Them

Cheap, Green Ways to Get Ants Out of Your House

Anyone who's had an infestation of ants in their house knows they can be pretty hard to get rid of. I recently dealt with this problem myself, and wanted to get rid of the ants without killing them. Ants are such amazing, social creatures, and I couldn't justify killing them like I can with bugs that can transmit disease or that bite. Also, with a 2 year old in the house, I don't want to spray chemicals around that she could get into. Here are some natural methods you can use to get rid of ants in your house as well as prevent them from getting in.

Get them out

-Destroy their trails: Ants leave a scent trail to alert other ants to the presence of food and to find their way back to their home. Vinegar destroys the trails while not harming the ants. As an added plus, vinegar makes a great natural cleaner for your house.

-Sugar mound: Place a mound of sugar outside your home, far enough away from the house that the ants won't get back in. Refresh their mound every once in a while, placing it farther and farther away from your house.

-Carry them out: This worked very well for me. Place a big piece of bread or other type of food near the ants' point of entrance. Leave it for half an hour or so. Soon you'll find a swarm of ants on the piece of food. Pick it up and put it into a plastic bag. Let them out somewhere else, far away from the house. Do this repeatedly until you've gotten most of the ants. Eventually, the other ants in the colony should realize that your house is a hostile environment and leave for somewhere safer.

Keep them out

There are several ways to keep ants out of your house.

-Block their entrances: Spend some time following some ants and see where they are coming in from. Block those entrances with tape (masking tape or blue painter's tape work well.)

-Natural ant deterrents: Place any of these in a line along the door or baseboards or wherever else ants are coming in from: Baking soda, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, or black pepper. Ants will avoid those areas.
