Naturally Clean Your School Classroom: Healthy Classrooms

A Teacher's Back-to-school Guide to Healthier, Cleaner School Classrooms

Penny Richards
This back-to-school season, it's not just the parents who are getting ready. Teachers are also preparing themselves for the day their classrooms fill up with children again. Part of this preparation involves school housekeeping strategies so that teachers have clean, healthy classrooms ready for their arriving students.

In this back-to-school guide for teachers, we'll discuss two steps for a healthier, cleaner classroom for your student's safety. We'll also talk about ways to clean your classroom in an environmentally-friendly, green manner.

2 Steps to a Cleaner, Healthier Classroom:

Step 1: Prevention is Key to a Clean Classroom

It is all about prevention! It's better to keep dirt and grime under control rather than spending late nights cleaning up after your students. Keeping dirt at a minimal is a good way to save you time that you could use for grading homework.

One great preventative measure for your classroom is using dirt-trapping mats at your classroom door. Put up a fun, colorful sign encouraging the kids to wipe off their shoes on this mat. This will help keep your students from bringing in mud and dirt.

Also, be sure to teach your students the importance of placing trash in the appropriate recycling bin and trash can. Be sure that these trash cans are available at strategic locations, such as at the entrance of your classroom. This will keep trash and litter at a minimum.

Step 2: Be Safe - Only Use Natural, Green Cleaning Supplies in Your Classroom

Switch from dangerous, toxic chemical cleaning supplies to all natural, green cleaning products. It's a smart move and its benefits are twofold: You create a cleaner, healthier and safer classroom by using green, natural cleaning products while also demonstrating environmental stewardship and conservation. It's a valuable chance to teach your kids the importance of being "green" in the classroom.

Using safe cleaning products is especially important in younger classrooms where children are tempted to touch and taste anything left out. Avoid toxic chemicals, and be aware of any side effects or treatments you need to know of should your students get into the cleaning supplies.

Is Your Classroom Healthy and Clean?

Keep your students healthy by keeping your classroom clean this back-to-school season. Little measures, like installing door mats, can save you classroom cleaning time. And using only natural, safe cleaning products can help the environment while also cleaning your classroom in a way that's safe for all of your children.
