Bent of the River Audubon Center
This 700 acre nature reserve is located in Sothbury in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills area. At the nature center a wide variety of habitats can be found. These include meadows, swamps, forest and the river bank of Housantonic River. It is also near the Pomperaug River. Because of this variety in the environment visitors will have the chance to spot many types of animals and plants. Families can make a visit a fun educational day out, enjoying miles of hiking trails while trying to identify wildlife and vegetation. One thing to note is that visitors are not allowed to bring pets, so remember to leave them at home.
White Memorial Conservation Center
Also located in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills area is another excellent nature activity that is great for everyone, especially families. This enormous nature center sits on 4,000 acres. Besides abundant wildlife, visitors can enjoy adventuring through some of the reserve's 35 miles of hiking trails. Besides the park there is also an interesting museum. The museum has a host of exhibits, many of which are specifically designed for children. There are hands on exhibits, live animals and information on the area's local history. All of these make a visit attractive to those of all ages.
Northwest Park
Northwest Park is a mutli-recreational center located in Windsor Connecticut. It is a wonderful option for those looking for nature activities. It is free to visit the park and enjoy its wildlife. Hours are daily from dawn until dusk. Facilities include excellent walking trails, including a brail marked path. There is a Nature Center and gift shop that is open Monday to Saturdays. In the summer there is a fun summer camp for children up to 8th grade. Events held at the park include the Coffee House Concert series, held most Saturdays between May and October. There is also a Country Fair held each September. The total park covers 473 acres and have 12 miles of trails. If you would like more information call 860-285-1886.
Dinosaur State Park
This nature activity is particularly good for families. The Dinosaur State Park is located in Rocky Hill, Connecticut and is one of the US's largest dinosaur track areas. Within the park visitors will enjoy seeing 250 different Jurassic specimens, including, dinosaurs and plants. Surrounding the exhibition center are two miles of nature trails. Gay City State Park
Situated in the picturesque Hebron area is this wonderful nature area. Nature activities that can be enjoyed include swimming, cycling, hiking, camping, fishing and picnicking. Besides its excellent nature experience, Gay City State Park also has some local historical significance. Gay City was once a real mill town, remnants of which, are now just a few foundations and headstones. The town was founded in 1796 by Elijah Andrus and his religious sect. Hammonasset State Park
Hammonasset is home to the largest beach in Connecticut. Nature activities include swimming, relaxing on the beach, picnicking, boating, fishing, hiking and camping. Camping costs $15 per night. Also located in the park is the Meigs Point Nature Center with hands on exhibits making it great for kids. Dogs are not allowed on the beach and must be kept on a leash at all times. Visiting Hammonasset is not free during the peak season. Connecticut residents will be charged $7 per car during the week and $10 on weekends. In the off-season the park is free to visit.
These are only a teaser of the nature activities that Connecticut has to offer. There are dozens of beautiful parks throughout the entire state. They all offer excellent walking and opportunities to enjoy nature.
